  • A6 c4 front springs,is one upside down?

    Hi lads
    Need help please
In process of swapping front struts from spare car
It has new shocks and springs that's why I am doing it
    But something don't seem right
One side spring collor markings is at the bottom of the springs
One other side it's on top of springs
    Is one fitted upside down?
And what is the correct way for them to be fitted ?collor code marking on the top or on the bottom
Can't find any information about it.
So I know what's side to turn over to correct position
    Any ideas,help please
    Thank you

From my experience the "colour" dots are fitted at the bottom. That is assuming aftermarket and genuine springs always have the dots fitted the same. The tightness of the coils usually indicates top and bottom.

      Will look tomorrow again
But both look nicely seated top and bottom
How can I work it out by coils?
Top and bottom of spring looks identcal no different .

My own springs are rusted so can't find any markings etc

dont quote me but if the coils look the same top and bottom then surely the springs can be fitted either way??????

What C4 A6 do you have?
Afaik only the factory springs have the painted dots on them and towards the bottom.
Personally I've bought aftermarket years ago and never seen painted dots on them.

I think that top and bottom of the C4 front springs are similar but different. One end has a tighter "hook" than the other.

Definitely different top and bottom of the rear springs.

The ends have to fit nicely into the rubber buffer and stop up against the "bump" on the bottom spring plate.

              It's a 1996 a6 c4 2.5tdi se

And I am taking bits from
              1995 se 2.5tdi

It was a UK car but been exported and back in to UK
              I got it for parts.
Springs are newish ,no rust on them all powder coating on springs intact
Clear collor markings on them , 1 green and 3 more of same collar but might be yellow not 100% sure until tomorrow when I have a look

Thank you for replay and photos
Bottoms of front springs in photo looks tighter fit and collor code is at that end too.

Those are supposed to be UrS factory sport springs for "1BE" code suspensions (check your build tag, bottom right corner).

I asked as there are several different springs on the S6 as you know.Interesting to see what your running on yours.
Those springs you put up,......were they for the V8 or turbo?

                          Hi boys
                          Just to update
Took drives side strut to mates garage and fitted new wheel bearing.
So we took spring shock etc out to be easier to move it under the press
Spring looks identcal top and bottom
We fitted it both ways to see how it's going to be.
With paint markings at the bottom,Last bit of spring that seats against the metal spring stop at the Base of strut ones all fitted and spring compressors taken off
Lifts of the Base first 25 mm of spring is up not touching base only by 2-3 mm
We turned spring over so paint marking are up on top
And that way it is seatted perfect top and bottom.
I might not be correct way of fitting it but it looks better.
Paint dots on springs are 1 blue and 3 orange.
Will see how it's going to be ones all fitted.
Trying to remove track rod ends now.
                          Wish me luck

My 93 UrS4 (AAN turbo) came with the non-sport 1BA suspension. I have been running Eibach Springs since 1999 (I bought the 93 in 1998). The springs in the photos are from the only year that NAmerican UrS4s (and UrS6s) came with the 1BE sport suspension, i.e. 1992 model year (after that they came with taller, softer, springs). NAmerica UrS4s only came with manuals and airconditioning in sedans so it was only really down to sport or non-sport for us. 92 sport springs are coveted.

There are a bewildering number of different springs for the UrS4s depending on engine (AAN or V8), sedan or avant, manual or automatic, air conditioning/no air conditioning, and, of course, sport suspension or non-sport suspension.

                            Front Springs: Item 18: http://audi.7zap.com/en/rdw/audi+a6+...407-407010/#18

                            Rear Springs: Item 8: http://audi.7zap.com/en/rdw/audi+a6+.../505-505030/#8

Always fun to go through the all AAN springs and then compare the part numbers and coding to the S6Plus springs. Turns out the front springs are the same as the NAmerican 92 UrS4 front sport springs. However, the rear springs were different between S6Plus sedan and avant.

                            Rear:

And then there were the marketing-only (maybe photoshop) springs (from the S6Plus sales brochure):

Try not to make yourself crazy figuring this out. I did (make my self crazy) but it is so long ago, I am cured (I don't care - I have Eibachs )
