  • Bent strut?

Morning all, I am refurbing running gear on 3 b4 cars and have found the shocks extremely hard to remove on a couple of them. Once removed it is also hard to reinsert shock. Does this mean that strut is bent?

Check if the strut tubes are not out of round due to removing the strut nut that holds the shock.

I grip the strut at its square base in the vice so it does not grip the tube, so don't think it's that.

How did you undo the nut though? Proper tool or stilsons?

Stilsons and a big vice but cam off fairly easy as it had been soaking for a few days.

            Shock-ing Interference

On pulling original OEM gas shocks out of B4 front struts, I have found similar resistance. Upon examination, one of the blue bodied Boges was deformed over much of its length, indented in some areas, and made larger in diameter in others; and there were slight rub marks on the raised areas from the interference made during the removal. My guess is this was the result of water ingress which then froze at some point causing the strange corrugations, a variation on "frozen strut syndrome" (detailed here on the forum and elsewhere) more often noticed when yellow Bilsteins are installed without the strut base drain-hole mod.

So does the above mean said mod could help prevent a re-occurrence in a non-Bilstein situation? Couldn't hurt.
