  • Project planning s1 e2, transverse engine...

Right now im completing the last bits on My timeattack urq, when tis finished im going to start a new project, an audi s1! Why? Because its the meanest car of all time, but i want to do something special, here in Sweden theres a Guy building an s1 With Nissan gtr driveline, and another one i know WHO bilds an escort cossworth With audi engine and gtr trans. The cossworth braked 904whp the other week

So my plan is to build an s1 that sound just like the original but handles like a modern race car. And i also want to see peoples faces when i pop the Hood..

What if i took the whole front end of an audi tt or audi A3 quattro, or even better the tt-rs and Put the s1 Shell on? Either turboed 07k or tt-rs engine.

At the moment ive collected two cars, an audi coupe gt fwd, and an audi 80 2-door sedan(unfortunatly with sunroof, but low mileage and great condition)
I also have the opportunity to buy an s2 coupe Shell for almost nothing.

I need some inputs, my main concern right now is the rear end, im going to use a haldex diff ofcourse, but i dont want to use the tt rear end, im thinking about using the s2/urq rear end or the best would be to do double wishbones around... Maybe the s2 rear floor is the best platform to build from? I dont want to build a spaceframe car, i want to make it look like its built from a production car

The other question is, do i shorten the gt, and change the roof, or do i cut the two cars in half and join them togheter, Wich is the easiest?

As i see it, the plus With shortening the gt is that its easier to get the length right and them just make a floor to it

The plus With cutting two in half is that i can make two complete ends of the car before putting it together, making it easier to work With before joining. Ofcourse am going to build a jig eitherway to get the car straight
This project is going to be a long-term one, maybe it Will take about 5 years or more, but i need help With a plan so i dont have do everything twice

With the 07k I don't think there is much benefit in running transverse other than packaging, I think in fact weight balance will be better with inline configuration, maybe use the OB4 gearbox to move the block back a few inches further. Proper suspension would be awesome. I have thought about using the TT rear multiple-link setup, I think it could be done more easily than trying to adapt the existing design to double wishbone. You can see from Terrybullwon's race car with some hard work it is possible to achieve 50/50 weight distribution. Sounds like an awesome project.

The 80 roof is wider than the coupe roof, you'll need a roof skin, C pillars are also stood up slightly.

I read about Liam Dorams rallycross car, the transverse config gave him an advantage because of the momentum from The engine gives better grip on accel With transverse setup so i thought i Will give it a try one other advantage usisng transverse 02m gearbox is that it is really rigid even oem, and theres dogring kits and different diffs and so on available, and who knows, someday if i wanted i could even throw in an dsg gearbox just like the old s1 using pdk-gearbox but different the germans have even found a way to make the dsg boxes handle 1000hp and 8s on the 1/4 mile...
The downside With transverse is that its harde to make room for double wishbones, so im probably gonna go with mcpherson up front..

As far as the tt rear setup i dont like the design, cant put the finger on why, but im thinking doing something like this Guy: http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthrea...-Rocco-Project
Not the same rear diff but i like the idea using double wishbones, the issue is finding spindles an hubs to match, but i Will look into that later..

As far as the roof and angles on the pillars, i Will use My 80 roof and a kevlar skin and make correct inner c-pillars, im not a fan of the coupe angled spq look and this project involves so much fab anyway so not making proper angles is not an option.

At the moment this project is in the planning stage, someday i will start but i dont think it Will be this year, maybe start cleaning things, build a jig collect parts and so on, but i want to plan this one properly this time so that its just about doing and not as much thinking

For the moment i am finishing the urq, a build that i started 2011, so 4 years later, it feers like a victory, now i just hope i dont break it or grenade the engine the frist thing i do

And please, any ideas about parts or how i can build it and so on is welcome, i know alot of you guys on the forum are amazing at building cars and probably have alot of good ideas
          So please share your thoughts
