  • 6 CD Changer not working!

The cd changer in the S6 has never worked since I got the car. Initially, the head unit just displayed "NO CD" when I pressed the MODE button to switch from the radio. I pulled the changer out to check the connection and now I can hear the cds flipping about in there, but all I get this weird Error message with every cd that's put into the changer cartridge:

I know this is a longggg shot, but does anyone have a functioning changer that they could lend me to rule out the head unit being at fault? I'd be happy to pay for return postage.

    Many thanks,

    Craig

start with cleaning the lense, just use a cotton tip and some alcohol or IPA. that might help.

I've got one, though from an S8 it's probably the same - need to check the exact model number.
Does yours have the usual DIN-style plug on the lead?

I'm rather a long way away in the Home Counties though.

Also, there's usually an adjustment (on each side) for the orientation (horizontal/vertical), just check that's correct.

Just checked mines a 4B0 035 111A (CX-CA1821LH), dated MARZ 2001 and made by Matsushita (Panasonic) in Germany.
Has the 13-pin DIN socket on the fly lead, like this:

            Thanks for your suggestions, chaps.

Yes, it has the same plug as your's, HP. Thanks for the offer to try your unit.

Mike, I totally forgot that you might have one in your car, so the next time I'm up your way, I'll give it a go.

Henk - that's a simple idea and could well be the one that works, so I'll try that too.

            Have a great weekend everyone!

I was going to stay out of this one because I am not sure about what sound systems you got in the UK. That said my words of caution are:

For the NAmerican version of the UrS6 with the wide Audi Delta Bose radio (with the ciggy lighter down on the console), the 6 disc CD changer that we got was made by Alpine specifically for Audi and can not be substituted with an a normal Alpine or Panasonic, even if the cables seem to fit. The communication protocol between the Audi Bose Delta and the CD changer are unique to the UrS6/C4 A6 applications (96-97 spec cars).

That might or might not help but at least I flagged the potential issue with trying a Panasonic changer.

Yup, this is the one that I have in my S6. I had considered getting a new head unit but have no idea what will fit the space as it's so bloomin' wide!

It's just the face of the head unit that is wide. The actual body of the head unit is standard 180 mm wide DIN. You could switch back to an UrS4 or 95 UrS6 cage if you can't figure out 20 mm wide filler strips for the spaces beside a regular single DIN head unit in a 96-97 cage.

Should have taken the correct brand new boxed head unit i offered to buy for you as a mate last November as i was visiting someone up north who had some really nice new old stock stuff. I would have thought you would have bitten my hand off at £50. Whats £50? nothing.......an oil change. Putting things into perspective around the same time I gladly paid the £60 Michael S2 wanted for a funk dash switch.

I don't even remember such an offer, O Self-Righteous One!
You sure you didn't dream that up in one of your "Mark: The Superhero" dreams??!

Anyway, no point in buying anything until I know what gizmo has the glitch.
Mike is going swap his changer into my system, so I should have a better
                      idea then.

                            Charming!

Just re read my post above and realised wording is everything. If it sounded like i was buying it as a gift for you, that wasn't the case. I'm amazed you can't remember the conversation but i did make you party/aware of the amazing deal on offer, which you declined. Imho if new rare spares come up at extremely good rates, it's madness to turn them down. Each to his own i suppose..................

This picture might jog your memory!

In NAmerica Audi did a close-out sale on those head units. I bought one for $25 just to have a spare. (It went with the 98 A6 C4 Avant when I sold it Dec. 2013)
