  • Das Smaragd RS2+ Coupe For Sale

    Summary
Well the time has come for someone else to enjoy this beauty after 8 years of ownership. This is a 6-speed 1994 ABY S2 Coupe that has been sensitively modified to RS2+ specification whilst still retaining its stock S2 looks. The engine and drivetrain was taken off the car 4 years ago and renewed / rebuilt as appropriate by Keith Edwards. All RS2 components fitted are genuine and in some cases like the front bumper and mirrors they are new. The engine has been remapped by Mark Hardy of Automark and now gives 380 lbft of torque with power at 318 bhp with instant spool and maximum 1.5 bar boost. This gives the car great low down / mid-range performance with utter reliability.

The car benefits from having Porsche 996 brakes front and rear (with R8 handbrake), which means the car squats tautly under heavy braking and combined with the H&R/Koni suspension and 4WD laser alignment gives sharp and predictable handling. Many other performance and specification changes make this car a real joy to drive. The car will handle the A roads with the best of them but will also tootle along at 30mph in 6th gear around town.

This must be one of the few S2 cars with fully working air conditioning after a comprehensive rebuild: other ancillaries like the alternator and steering pump have also been recently rebuilt. The interior has been kept substantially original except for a Kenwood head unit, a boost gauge and a Parrot hands-free kit. The black leather has been kept in great shape with regular conditioning and shows little signs of wear for 21 years and 133,000 miles.

As anyone on this great forum knows it takes much time and effort as well as money to keep these cars going. It has taken me a while to source and fit all the parts to get the car to this state - some are like the proverbial hen's teeth to get hold of now. Thanks for looking.

Wow, I can't believe your selling this car after all the effort you put in to the build, it's a truly exceptional example and priced accordingly, if anything a bargain, especially when one takes the spares package into consideration!

Best of luck with the sale, can't see it hanging around too long.

If you don't mind me asking, what else has taken your eye?

            Cheers fellas for the comments

Why do we put ourselves through all the pain of a rebuild.....? Well the proof is in the driving! This car has never let me down and always got me home through some very foul weather in the Lake District near where I live. Many other cars simply could not do it. I use her most weeks at least once to go to work and you know the feeling when you get up and think what car am I going to drive today. These cars give you that feeling.

Like several others on the forum I have had a soft spot also for Porsche. Must be the shared heritage, parts, great sound etc. Anyway a mate of mine was rebuilding one for a friend of his and i took a shine to this particular 996 C4 and kept asking jokingly if it was for sale. Anyway, rather sadly after his friend passed away suddenly, the car was surplus to his friend's wife's requirements and came up for sale. I had to act quickly and buy the car. Now the M96 engine issues are well documented but this car had a new engine through Porsche - still only has 600 miles on her now. So I figured it would be some time if anything was to happen again

The other side of the double garage has a wooden boat that I am restoring which may take some time so the S2 has been relegated outside. The thing that has persuaded me to sell is that the S2 was rather lonely existence because my wife and family did not like travelling long distances in her. The 996 has changed their view and we now go out as a family. So reluctantly she is for sale and I wanted her to go to a real enthusiast to keep her in great condition, hence offering her on the forum first.

Ahh, that all makes a lot sense to me, if your family don't like travelling in your S2 but do enjoy the Porsche then it's a no brainer.

Best of luck with the recent addition, if she's just had a fresh engine and you look after it (which I'm sure you will) then it should serve you well, their lovely cars.

I hope your S2 goes to a true enthusiast who'll appreciate all your hard work!

Man that car is mighty tidy looking... If it had Cup-3 alloys, carbon trim and digital climate retro-fit it would be even better (for my old tastes) !

A serious amount of wedge and effort has gone into that machine - I could likely spend more on my project, though its going a very different direction and I still may end up wishing I had done something like this for tasty road use... Especially 5yrs down the line when its still not finished.

Hope whoever gets this one looks after it properly. Am I right in saying this one is setup with some version of the small hybrid turbo - hence the relatively modest bhp number but expecting little or no lag with a healthy torque spread ?

This thing could easily be blown for greater grunt, based on the running gear and other engine works but thats for someone else - looks a great car !
