  • Which engine management system to use ?

Hey all, im going for an 800 awhp setup and i'm stil deciding which engine management system to use on my 200 quattro. I want to use preferably maxxecu but its pricey for 1800 euro and then there is VEMS but ive heard stories about processing power or problems with mapping. Positive is its only 800 euro. Does anybody has other good engine management systems except EMS or megasquirt which can run a flex fuel sensor and detect water level in your ethanol? Im now running basic motec with different chips. So if anyone has any experience they want to share or advice im more than happy to hear it.

MoTeC is very high tech, have you considered them?

Motec is very high priced. Over 2k easy. I can vouch for maxxecu. You wont regret!

There is a lot of choice out there. It depends what you want in terms of functionality. Motec is probably the best out there, but at a big cost. But if you want to go with lots of data and telemetry then it comes into its own.
For a mid range and mid cost, MaxxECU and Link G4+ are the two options I looked at - high quality hardware and good softwar that is easy to use. In the end I bought a MaxxECU.

            Ecumaster Emu.
I think the best choise, if you dont want to spend over 1000€.
I tuned alot of this ecus and I really love it.
They also have a plug and play adapter.

Plenty of people having good results with vems. No processing problems that I know of?

Hi, have you take a look at http://www.emeraldm3d.com. They have a 'plug and play' lead for the AAN/ABY loom so no cutting. http://http://www.emeraldm3d.com/ecu...i-aan-aby.html

The Emerald K6 has plenty of configurable inputs from specific sensors.
The Emerald K6+ and the a new version of software are all in development too.

                  I'd say the same.
Have been using vems since 2010 without issues.

I was using motronic for years and then VEMS. I also mapped several cars on VEMS (and Motronic) for years now. But for some reasons, I was looking for a better I5 ECU.

So last year I read descriptions/manuals and installed the software of ALL the following ECUs to compare:

                    Megasquirt
                    EMS
                    EMtron
                    Motec M1
                    AEM Infinity
                    Syvecs S6 S8
                    LifeRacing F88
                    Halltech Elite
                    ECU481
                    MAXXECU
                    LINK G4
                    Vipec
                    Tatech
                    Autronic
                    ECUMASTER
                    Triject
                    KMS
                    DTA S80
                    Fueltech

After weeks and moths of comparing and doing configs for the I5 in different ECU software to get a feeling, my decision was the new Link G4 Thunder.

I had to start from scratch and also had to build a wiring connector.
After very lot of homework and calculating a configuration on the bench, the engine was starting with the first keyturn and idling fine but I still have to do a lot of mapping in the car now. I like this ECU very much but its in the 1800€ range + looms.

                    my first keyturn -->

I'm interested to see what the general consensus is on the Haltech series of ECUs as they are favoured by the Mighty Car Mods boys and they seem to know what they're doing (the Haltech guys)....

If you are looking for a cheaper unit - the Ecumaster EMU is very good for what it does.
                        More expensive - Link/Vipec.
                        Even more expensive - Autronic.
And by far the most expensive is Motec.

As it is possibly a race car - you need to answer questions such as Dash integration, Traction control (if allowed), E-throttle support to create proper antilag and so on. Autronic and Motec work very well together, for example the Motec dash has support for the Autronic stream protocol. So you can save a little on the ECU and if you need one of the best dashes in the world, you can easily add it later.

And most importantly - who is going to map your car? If you know who is going to be mapping it, then throw this entire thread out of the window and ask them what ECU to fit. Then fit it. This will give you the best result.

Let me put it this way - your initial question is far too vague. The answer is "the right one for the job".
If you are not planning on motorsport, maybe planning to map the car yourself then the Ecumaster ECU is cheap, works well, has great support, and is a professional product.

This got me intrigued. Still after full pricing Ecumaster costs about the same as VEMS package.

Looking at the ecu master it doesn't support 4.9lsu wideband.
Also for me I never liked the option of having an adapter for the ecu which will mean that I would have to modify the dash to fit it.
Of course this makes little sense for a race car

I dont like adaptors too - but I like hot glue armageddons much less

but like prj said, it all depends on your specific goals and capabilitys. Some points for me, full race functions, CAN, on board LSU4.9 Lambda , on board EGT, on board knock control
                              AND reliability!!!
                              - fortunately I dont need a tuner
