  • aaarghhh.....headcloth!

So, the saggy headcloth has got to me so I purchased some foam-backed alcantara type material from a classic car show........and dropped the headcloth.

The above was after I'd started taking the grab-handles off and trim off.....with doors and tailgate open the through draft soon loosened most of it!!

And it's out, this stuff has now put me right off ginger biscuits!!

Whilst I now have all the foam stuff off the board is still a bit sticky....can anybody say if it'll be ok to apply spray-glue to this?

I cannot say for sure but when I did mine I used a scraper that was sharpened. That seemed to get rid of most of the glue as well.
I then wiped the board down with pre-paint wipe as best I could. I used foam backed headliner that had 4 way stretch. Makes it easier to do the area round the sunroof controls as there are a lot of curves there.

The contact glue you use is extremely important. Under sunlight the headliner will get hot and if you use the wrong glue you will have a dropping headliner again in no time.

I usedd 3M 90 for headliner, and 3M Super 77 for covering pillars with faux alcantara. (3m 90 will go straight though the faux alcantara

Just use water... its water based glue.... don't use anything else or it will contaminate the surface for when you apply the new adhesive.

Make sure the adhesive you use is high temp resistant. .

      Good luck !

If that's right that would explain why all these head linings are venerable.

Dont think the glue lets go, its the foam that just disintegrates.

I did try water and a scrubbing brush but had no luck. So ended up scraping the glue off. They might not all be water based glue.

Thanks for that Eric, I'll need to check the adhesive.....it's not 3M stuff though

That's my fear that if I use "tar and glue remover" for example, it'll leave a film that the glue won't adhere to?

Remove as much old foam as you can and leave it for a day or two, that sticky crap will dry off.

Andy, aye the seats were a bit "in your face"?!.......20 years ago I would've loved them!!
Sold them on to a guy with a Renault Megane........he seemed to like them!
Fitted the seats that were in Jack's avant when I bought it, they're out a mk5 Golf(?)....Recaros with Quattro script.
Regards how's the car going, it's quieter now that I've replaced a rear wheel bearing and I have a spare wheel now where there was just a space.
The intercooler was bent and so the crank pulley had been rubbing on it but this is now sorted as well.
Engine goes well enough though......I just need to start loving it, which has been hard due to some issues as mentioned.
How's Nissan ownership under the rising sun!!??

Failing that Im paying someone to do the job as I really dont want to do it! I took one out of another avant and that was a pita enough for me!!!!

Sounds much more OEM+, rather than aftermarket.

That is frustrating for a top dollar car, it will be worth it once you have it up to your standards though.

Nissan is just doing its thing, its a nice toy, but not a hobby. Got a puppy so Sunday runs are out for a bit
