  • hi hows everyone im thinking getting a s2 coupe quattro 96

    Hi would like to know if there's anything i need to look out for, as i have not owned one before?

    I have a coupe 2.6 E at the moment but have wanted an S2 for some time the im thinking about is silver and has been up for sale before this time its a 1996

    Welcome, usual stuff as with any car purchase. History, service records and things like brakes, belt changes etc. More specific to these cars, I would be looking at the state of the subframes and the underside of the car. Many replacement parts are no longer available, so finding one in as good a condition as possible is a must unless you have deep pockets (which you will need anyhow) Coupes often have leakage problems in terms of water ingress into light clusters. Look out for damp boots, carpets but you will already know that as a coupe owner.

    Good solid cars, so with any luck you will find a decent example. I would not be too fussed about mileage unless it is starship miles.

    Good luck. Lots of other things to look out for, others will be a long shortly to give other advice.

          As you already have a coupe you will know most of the common issues.
          common niggles On s2s look for boost leaks and check the rear diff lock works etc.

            Where abouts in the UK are you? Also check out the buying guide on s2central. Check the usual suspects as you would any car. Also check for rust on inside of arches, along top on windscreen as the screen is glued sometimes paintwork is damaged when they are replaced. Also do the brake bomb check as this is costly to repair

              Thanks some good advice! These cars are a good age now so most will require some work unless they've been well looked after. As mentioned don't worry too much about milage, many of these engines have seen 200k+ without needing rebuilds.

              I'm sure there are some buyers guides on the forum some so worth a search.

              Post up where about you or an S2 you've seen is in the country and there may be a member locally that maybe willing to view it with you.

                    I'm no expert but it looks like you need to decide if you want one that is perfect, in which case you need deep pockets straight away, or get one that needs love and drains your pockets slowly.

                    Be patient, know what you want and with S2's be prepared to react quickly as they don't seem to hang around too long.

                      is a break boom check this this for a bmw but would this be how u would do it

                      As I understand it, the bomb is basically a little two-part pressure chamber with an internal diaphragm. On one side is pressurized nitrogen gas. On the other side is ATF that gets pumped in by your power steering pump. Because the pump can't react quickly enough to emergency braking, the bomb is there to help. The bomb goes bad because the nitrogen leaks out over time or the diapragm fails.

                      When you check your ATF level in the power steering reservoir, you shut off the car, remove the reservoir lid, and pump the brake pedal 10-25 times until it gets hard. As you do this the fluid in the reservoir rises. What is happening is the bomb is emptying some each time you hit the brake pedal. When the pedal feels hard, the bomb is empty. Hence, if your bomb is bad, ithe pedal feels hard from the first pump. Also, your fluid level will not rise in the reservoir.
