  • VW Touran - Emissions Too High - Cures ?

My wife's 04 1.9TDI Touran failed it's emission test, it has been faultless since owning it from new, in that we've only had the oil changed and the timing belt done a while ago. It has 71k on it. Revo chip and is driven on 3 and 4 mile journeys each day. In and out to the office. No high rev or high speeds.

Is there a known / possible fault that would be causing it's emissions to be too high ?

Is there a set of pipes / manifold etc. that might be getting clogged over the years since 2004, that needs to be taken apart and cleaned out ?

Know a good bit about my ABY and AANs but not his diesel.

Any help is appreciated, it has to go for it's retest in two weeks time, prefer to ask here rather than on a diesel forum I am not familiar with.

    Thanks.

    Does it have a MAF?
I replaced one on our Sharan and it helped emmissions.
Huge clouds of black smoke for about 20 mins afterwards.
    And improved performance.
If its only doing short journeys it won't help
    Go give it a thrashing!

Emissions I assume you mean smoke test. It must be bad if so. You can measure the mad on vcds. I would suggest giving it a really good thrash prior to re test. Have you had it plugged in to read for faults?

As this is a pd it will have a vacuum controlled egr and they don't have a lambda so not a lot to go wrong emissions wise. Is it obvious
        Y smoking?

As monkeymagic said, give it a proper thrash and that will bring it down,of course do other checks suggested too.

Thrash it for an hour or so and then re-test, almost certainly just coked up with those short journeys.

If it were egr it would run rough and be throwing a cel. Later pd and cr use electric egr which stick causing them to cut out and not restart.
5 mins with vcds would tell you loads.

Try unplugging MAF if performance doesn't change it's dead.

Again it takes seconds with vcds to see what the maf is doing. Unplugging to diagnose is frustrating.
tdi rarely throw a fault code for a duff maf. You can read the flow rate easily in measuring blocks
