  • Drive axle bolt grade/tightening torque

Just bought new rear outer drive axle boots for my ABY, and they came with the new center bolts of course. The old bolts were 12.9 IIRC and the new ones were 8.8. Should be a quality component couse its a spidan branded boot. However I'm concerned if those grade 8.8 will take the required 200nm + 180deg torque? That's almost as much as the crank bolt and that's a 12.9! So is it safe to use the 8.8 bolts and toque it up to spec?

I came across the same problem when I purchased aftermarket boots. In addition to being not the same grade bolt, they were 1/2 inch shorter. So I buy Audi parts when I do the outer boots now. I mean the original boots lasted quite well, the axle bolts were the proper grade and length and came with grease and a new concave washer and proper plastic spacer. Hard to find good aftermarket stuff these days, as so much stuff comes from asia.

Personally, I would not use a lesser grade bolt.

They can have my car when they pry my cold dead fingers from the steering wheel.
