  • Hard Clutch pedal

    Hi!

I have problem with my clutch in my urs4 with 4.2 engine and 6 speed gearbox.
Clutch pedal is very hard. I have already replaced both cylinders and complete clutch but it is still hard.
Any ideas what to check next ?

    Thanks

I have both a 93 UrS4 with the AAN and OE Dual Mass Flywheel and appropriate clutch plate and disc (Luk) *AND* a 94 UrS4 ABH V8 avant with OE single mass flywheel and its appropirate clutch plate and disc (Sachs in my case).

Normally with the AAN, a hard clutch pedal is a sign that the clutch is wearing out. If you don't heed this warning the next thing to break is either the clutch pedal itself or the clevis that connects the pedal to the clutch master cylinder.

The ABH V8 has a dished single mass flywheel and the clutch pressure plate is a different in design than the AAN.

What is strange is the V8 clutch pedal has two over-center springs where as AAN clutch pedal only has one. When I purchased my 94 V8 S4 last November, it had just broken the V8 clutch pedal (probable cause was a broken/binding slave cylinder rod) - but that only came out later). The seller has just had an AAN clutch pedal installed with the single over-center spring. In early January I had the clutch replaced with an OE Sachs kit and new slave cylinder (it had failed dramatically by then) but left the single spring AAN clutch pedal in place. Bottomline: The combination of new clutch and AAN clutch pedal is much easier to drive than my AAN in the 93 S4.

If you hadn't already done the clutch and cylinders, I would have recommended doing those. Since you have done them, I think you need to look at the clutch pedal and its connections/bushings for binding issues and maybe removing one of the two springs.

Here are some example C4 UrS4 clutch pedals. Left to right:

    1. AAN clutch pedal 4A1721315 - note one spring attachment arm
    2. Used but good C4 V8 clutch pedal 4A1721319 - note two spring attachment arms (not sure why)
    3. Broken C4 V8 clutch pedal that came with my "new" 94 V8 avant back in November

(Note: the V8 pedal has 4A1721319 in the casting but Kate, the friendly red-headed parts girl, says the PN should be 4A1721315E)

      Hi Dave !

Thanks for great answer ! Well i have tried to remove both springs but clutch is still too stiff
i wonder if this is because i have master cylinder for AAN and not AEC engine ( 4a1721401 instead of 4a1721401) ?

        Umm..

        a) Think you meant 4A1721401 instead of 4A1721401C?

        b) If you have an UrS4 V8, the engine is an ABH, not AEC (which was in the V8 UrS6s).

Regardless, the 4A1721401C *is* the ABH and AEC clutch master cylinder. I did a quick Google on "4A1721401C specifications" and there are very few hits and those that are found do not have specifications (I was thinking the piston diameter might be larger than the AAN 4A1721401).

        Can you source a 4A1721401C?
