  • Slave cylinder

    I;m trying to replace the clutch slave cylinder having removed the old one which when removed was in good nick i'm
    trying to put the new one back in and having a spot of bother with actually getting it to sit in the recess i was thinking if i remove the linkage from the box will it cause any problems as it would give me more room .

    I bought one from Eurocarparts that we couldn't get to fit bought from Audi slotted straight in

      Also bought mine from euro carparts i do have a spare from kits Rs2 that i will try instead.

        Did you set the slave cylinder rod all pushed in and locked?
        I did that on mine and it was far easier.
        Push the rod all in and screw a cap on the hole where the line connects.
        By the cylinder being new and perfectly sealed the rod will stay retracted.
        Position and fix the part.
        Loose and take off the cap connect the line.

          Agreed, this is the way forward. Makes it very easy, and no need to disturb the gear linkage.

            This is a sod of a job mostly down to access, I use to really struggle with them but found a bit of wrinkle that makes it much, much less infuriating, it's still a fiddle but I found doing the following makes things go more smoothly.

            Clean the hole in the bell housing with brake cleaner and soft rag until spotless then smear the shoulder of the boot on the cylinder where it locates in to said hole with a THIN coat of red rubber grease, it should pop in easily then.

            Don't be tempted to use any other sort of lubricant and only use a small amount as you don't want any sort of contamination to fall into the bell housing.

              Agreed re the use of the small amount of lubricant, but pushing back the rod and being able to 'hold' it in the retracted position with the use of a cap or old pipe connection folded over to keep the vacuum in place is the way to make it an absolute doddle, compared to no 'grease' and the rod extended, which is next to impossible and extremely aggravating.

              btdt a few times at this stage.

                I've never kept the rod retracted using vacuum...that's a really good idea, I'll do that as well if I ever have to change one in-situ again.

                  Got it sorted in the end a few briused knuckles and a podger bar, just tried bleeding the clutch using eezi bleed but pedal still not returning, A new master cylinder was fitted 3 yrs ago so not expecting it to be the problem.

                    I used a eurocarparts one I ended up removing the mount and found this helped, been in 18 months now

                      Mine is also a euro carparts one didn't have the rubber disc and the threaded rod was to thin had to mod it to fit with the old one lasted until now. I found someone who works at our local VW garage who said he will take a look at it as he looks after his old mans Ur, it will the first time i will have been to someone else to sort the Car as i havn't found any one who will touch it I get the feeling that they are unsure about it or as one garage told me it's to old don't know anything about these cars.
