  • 01E Paddle shifting to S2

    Hey guys.

We're designing H paddle shifting mechanism (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdrIiRBonr8) for 01E gearbox and currently have only the gearbox at hand. We did this conversion in the past, but since we don't have a any S2 car with us anymore, I need the measurements of the space between the gearbox and original tunnel. Any help would be more than appreciated.

We will be converting a single rod to 2 rod using a converter (see picture). We will then connect the rods with actuators. We're still deciding (depending on the space) whether to mount the actuators individually or using actuator assembly box (like the one in the video).

    Thanks!

Cool project. Can actuate the clutch with the pneumatics too?
I can't help with the info you require unfortunately, but the gear linkage on the S2 runs along the side of the gearbox not on top & there isn't a great deal of space on the top.

Hey. Yes, clutch is also actuated with additional actuator. Basically it's a pneumatic/hydraulic assembly using master cylinder (pushed by the pneumatic cylinder) inline, just like hydraulic handbrake. There are two speeds that set the fast/slow release of the clutch, depending whether you shift up or down.

great. now that i want to get rid of the dogbox and Audi motor, go to RWD auto and LS1 in the AWD CQ race car, this shows up. i like cool neat gadgetry... :-(

Cool. What sort of cost do you have in mind. Anything for a 03a box? Similar setup to 01e.

That's going to be a brilliant project! Can the system be used on standard boxes or is it too fast for the synchros?

I suppose the speed can be adjusted with the controller to suit different synchro and gearbox types.

i like this but i do wonder what if there is something wrong with your gearbox, let says a bad syncro from 3 to 4 gear, the gearshifter has no feeling so is this covert to?

its not a matter of worth, Chris. its a matter of "i am selling the dogbox, not rebuilding the motor in the awd car, and getting an LS-based motor and auto trans and going to do a reliable RWD turbo v8" now.

but at that money, it is well over what i want to spend ALONG WITH another $2500 or more to make this 4cyl happen. again.

                            Hey guys.

Yes, not cheap setup. The thing is that high quality pneumatic parts are very expensive and there's a lot of development involved. If any of you should be interested, I'm pretty happy to offer individual parts and you buy/build your own setup with my help. I'm actually thinking of making this project open to everyone and just sell the electronics, but haven't really had the time yet to document anything.

Basically, you need two multi position actuators (with position feedback) with valves, compressor and a reservoir. Everything else is a matter of controlling the valves and mounting everything up.

Fully undertandable that this kind of things cost. A diy kit would be a really interesting option.
