  • RUF Wheel Bearings - dont buy them

I sourced a few of these wheel bearings from ebay for £17 each and had one of them fail after a few months. I blamed the guy who pressed them in and assumed he damaged them so i replaced the two fronts again, but this time i did it myself with my new hydraulic press only for them to fail again after a couple of months.

The two in the rear have been fine, but its fairly conclusive that they cant take the loadings on the front axle. Just replaced them with FAG bearings which were close to £50 each so hopefully these will last a little better.

Guess that's what you get for being a tight ****

I made that mistake only once, now it's only SKF or FAG bearings for my cars!

That's good to know, I'm in the same situation with my Corrado fitted a 'Topran' front wheel bearing and it's lasted months.

SKF or FAG are going to be my only options from now on.

Touchwood, I'm having good results with Ruville bearings, also German and part of the Schaeffler Group which also owns FAG, INA & LUK so should be of equal quality

RUF bearings manufactured in China, not affiliated to any vehicle manufacturer (that I know), so produced as they see fit.

Quality will be poor as discovered, the old adage is buy cheap and buy twice.

Been this route before with Cv joints, and its not worth the hassle for the savings

I had some new CV joints fitted to a propshaft and balanced, they were cheap (ish) in price but VERY cheap in quality. Lasted maybe a couple of thousand miles and when i took them off there was 4-5mm of vertical play in the shaft and the splines were so soft and deformed i needed a bearing puller and large hammer to get them off the end of the shaft. Consider the original Lobro joints i took off were still pretty much ok after 25 years, i couldn't agree more with the saying 'buy cheap, buy twice'

The one and only time I fitted a Topran component to any of our cars was a cap for the coolant expansion tank on the allroad - it failed in spectacular fashion on a motorway about 60 miles later - thankfully I had the old one still in the car (with a damaged seal) and that is still doing sterling service thousands of miles later. Absolute cheap shyte - never again - lesson learned !

I find your better fitting old parts instead of new. Obviously doesn't work with bearings but alternators and even used drive shafts. New stuff is just so poor in quality.

Well its less than a year later and i have just replaced the last RUF bearing on the back axle, both of which failed this year. Utter garbage.

I now have four FAG bearings fitted so it will be interesting to see how they last...

I have had to change all of my bearings 4 times in my ownership. The first 2 times were early on and were from what could be said a trusted source. They packed up within 6 months each time and after being somewhat patronised when made comment about this to the vendor I went to an industrial supplier in Birmingham. I replaced them again 4 years later and then again recently. It is pot luck I feel.

Its a nightmare isn't it. In the last year i have replaced wheel bearings 10 times, 6 ****** ebay bearings, then the 4 FAG bearings. I've also replaced all 10 CV joints as they went one by one over the last year too.

Also tried to change a rear tie rod today i bought on ebay to find some clown put the wrong part inside the box. Of course i only discovered this after removing the old one. Damn car is seriously testing my patience at this stage..

This for all my VAG cars. For my CV joints I buy Lobro. I repack my own.

yep same here, i have a topran new in box and i think i'll never put it lol
i have already tried front triangle for my gt, if the steel is ok it's not the same for rubber (even if the part is made in Spain)
Seal for the posi on my GTQ, new and already leaking from Topran too
now Topran only for 'simple' part (cable for seat, etc..)
