  • Sunroof motors interchangeable?

    Hi all!
Does anyone know wether the different types of sunroof motors are interchangeable with each other?
The original motor in my B3 is constantly failing on me so I was hoping I could replace it with the 'square' type out of a B4.
I noticed the mounting holes are a bit further apart on the newer types, but I might be able to make that work if the sunroof itself hasn't changed troughout the years.

EDIT: Just noticed thare are 4 mounting threads on my sunroof 'gearbox', two 40mm apart and two 55mm. Can anyone confirm the mounting width of the B4 motor?

Just to note there's two different sunroof motors for a B4 , one made by Bosch that's linked into relay 363 and the other made by Webasto with its own septate relay (same as an old beetle headlight relay incidentally)

Both are completely different in shape

Yep, and it's the webasto thats giving me troubles.
The piece where the motor mounts to on the sunroof has the same Pn. from '86 till '96, and all the required mounting holes are there.
I found out today that the Bosch motor has the mounting threads 82mm apart.
The B3 roof has nutplates in those holes, so it should bolt right up if I take those out...

BTW; Do you know if there are any major differences in the wiring between those two?

The wiring certainly isn't interchangeable, there's more wiring in the Webasto motor but that is due to the Webasto relay being stuffed in between the motor and the roof skin. The relay for the Bosch unit is over the pedals and also works the electric windows.

Too complicated for me to go much further into it !
