  • Big Brake conversion onto B7 A4

Guys i have the option to inherit a pair of Brembo 4 pots from Human Joist from his B5 RS4,and want to use them to do a big brake conversion on my daily. There are two reasons the original 288mm set up is a little poor and they look awful under my RS4 18's.
I am looking at using a 321/30 audi b5 S4 disc and most likely getting a carrier made up. The current set up is a 360/32 set up but that is too large for what i want.
Has anyone done a similar conversion on a b6/b7? If so what discs were used and what carrier? Im not sure exactly what the calipers are as yet and will get the part number asap. They look like the 996 ones used on S2 but slightly larger.
    Any advice/experience is welcome. Ste

No one done 4 pots on a a4? I'm thinking a8 323 discs and having carriers custom made.

Worst case you could get custom carriers made. I had mine done at BG Developments in Bromsgrove for my AP setup and they were really helpful

These are the Ottinger ones he had? If so they are 996 calipers, as used with the common A8 314/323 disc upgrade on the S2.
You'll need custom brackets I would guess, if so the world is your oyster really.
A8 323s are well proven. Another option, the B6 S4 uses a 345x30 disc which are cheap and would work also

I've done bit on this today. I had already spoken to bg developments who will help design and fabricate the carriers,
I tried a8 discs the hat height/ off set is too great. However drilled s4 320 x 30 fit perfectly and look factory.
Once Jim gets off his jaxxy and changes his calipers I will deliver the caliper old carrier for bolt holes etc and disc to BG and I'll have a complete set up.
Error the calipers are larger than s2 996 I think they are off 996t or gt2.

The b7 s4 discs I used are drilled items from Bosch 120 the pair. So this should br a relatively cheap conversion.

In the pics they look too small to be Turbo or GT3 4 pots but I could be wrong

Easy way to tell is to measure the distance between the mounting holes.
If they are the big big reds, i.e. the Turbo or GT3 4 pot they would be better suited to the larger 345mm disc as they are designed to work with 350mm rotors

IMHO no way these calipers can swallow a 350mm rotor, the pad is far too small.

I did also fit big brakes on my a4 b7 quattro. I used Brembo 6 pots ZL 18 calipers of a porsche cayenne/q7, with ML 55 AMG 345mm brake discs, i needed to enlarge the centre off the brake discs 1mm, not a big deal. For the calipers you dont need adapters, they bolt right up. You only need some good bolts and a 1mm bushing for in the caliper. Great setup.

I may be wrong Alex but they look bigger. Jim is eventually doing the 18z set up. I don't need such huge brakes though. The part number is different to those on s2 though. Jim did have them on 380 discs

Those 18Zs sure look like a nice easy upgrade on the B6/B7

Yes I no doubt end up helping Jim but looks a fiddle.
I'll let you know how my conversion pans out

If the last numbers are 430 then its a 996TT or GT3 not the regular Boxter S caliper.
Strangely Porsche used those calipers on 330 and 350mm discs!

Hopefully with custom carrier I can run 321 mm? I hope so as 345 will add expenDr and look bit much imo

I used these 345 x 32 Merc discs on my S2 under 17" rims. Work like a dream, But a fully functional ABS essential. http://www.s2forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=50939
