  • 90 quattro type 85, happy 30th

It's about time to start a project thread about one of my type 85 quattro's, it had it's 30th birthday yesterday which we didn't celibrate.

Bought this car in may 2011 in Offenbach Germany, went to the local government office and got the paperwork done to be allowed to drive it back home. Next to it there was an office that made license plates, less than €100,- on I could drive the car home again.

Not much changed since then, took some parts of the car I needed for my coupe quattro and dropped the leather interior this car came with in another 90 quattro and sold that one.

Two weeks ago I was 95% done with our garage rebuild and finally had time to get the car home. So here it is now, waiting to have some work done.

    Plans:
    - glass out respray
    - fit 90 quattro or preferably 4000 quattro interior
    - fit power windows
    - ditch the lousy JT engine for a KV engine with new NF1 head
    - powder coat subframes and wishbones and fit alu bushes/new rubber bushes
    - ofcourse new engine and gearbox mounts as well
    - coilover kit, maybe by fitting B3 2-piece struts and hubs
    - 15" Ronal wheels (how original )
    - stainless back box

That's pretty much it, nothing major really. Hope to have it done before it's 31st birthday though.

Very nice especially in blue. Ditch those little wing indicators though. What's the details on the NF1 Head?

            They will be ditched

The NF1 head has bigger valves, not sure if only the inlet valves are bigger or the outlet as well. Also got a camshaft out of an 1.9 carb. 5 pot that should be different to other 10V camshafts, maybe has more duration or higher lift. Will look into that when I need to, for now the main thing is to strip the car and get it ready for paint.

Yeah it was a mess then, a much better place to be in now though.

You will see it someday for sure, hopefully when it's looking better than it does now

                  Hi Patrick,
At last you will get the 90 back on the road.
You have obviously decided against going the 10/20v turbo route. As you are rebuilding, have you looked into putting LT crank shaft in. This is what the TSR coversion did raising cc to 2500. Bags of torque for non turbo car.

                  20v turbo conversion

Chris, the 20VT route is still a go, but not in this car

That crank option sounds very interesting, do you know what else needs changing?
