  • swap old climate control for new

Does anybody know if it's possible to swap the oder type of climate control unit for the newer ones (like the rs2 has).

    thanx,

Not easily Jeffer... I've looked into this at some length and cannot say it would be an easy task.... Wiring aside.... the ordinary AC has all the air direction flaps and heating via cables whereas the climate uses electrically operated motors to open and close flaps etc. It could be done, but not easily, you'd really need to rip the entire control systems from a 'donor' car and then tackle the wiring issues.

Anybody EVER seen a UK spec RS2 with the digital air conditioning ?

In all the manuals and resources that I have looked into, I came to the conclusion that all the RHD S2, RS2 or any other 5 cylinder Audi 80 derivatives have the manual (3-knob) air-con system.

That sucks - but I'd like to proved wrong so that it would at least be technically possible to put the whizzy digital AC into a RHD S2. The manual system we have in the UK doesn't support diagnostics which is the main reason I'd prefer digital.

Paul, according to my data books, all cars fitted with mutli rib belts? are capable of self diagnosis for a/c systems! I will forward innfo to you or you can have a look at combe if i bring the book

Yep - and you'll find such a belt and compressor on the V6 models in the UK as best I can discover...

The compressor fitted to RHD 80 series 5-cylinder engines (incl S2) and it's associated manual controller doesn't support diagnostics.

And what about LHD s2's. I live at the other side of the pond so mine is LHD, and is the digital version (no knobs on there) but the older models with 22 channel diagnostics. So is there a possibility that the RS2 newer digital version while adapt to the harness and all the other components?

Ahhh Jeffer - you are lucky I think - it would take some time to confirm parts list etc, but I would be very confident that your LHD early digital system could be upgraded to the later style. Doubt the wiring loom would escape modification. I have schematics for the system that you want... BUT I don't have yet have schematics for the old system that you have.

                    Yeh Paul,

Yo make me happy!!! For now. So if you have the schematics for my old climate control I can rewire some wires and connect it? That would be superb.

btw: do you know a supplier that supplies the window mechanism cables and pulleys? for S2 coupe.

                    thanks man.

I've looked it up in the ETKA, and saw that the 1990 coupe quattro S2 had the same climate control wiring loom as the RS2. And that the climate controlunit both had the same VAG nr. So tonight I'm check it in real-time to make sure the connections are the same.

                      cheers,

                              Hi Mihnea,
Maybe a little more info, please. Did Jeffer just change out the control units, or did he have to do a little rewiring to get the later Climate control unit to work properly?
