  • Here's a neat cheap trick for our wipers

The intermittant wipers on our S2's are a preset time interval and rarely wipe at the right speed! so why put up with it when you can fix it in about 2 minutes flat?

    Receipe:

    Take one adjustable wiper relay.

Remove old relay from the engine bay fuse board. It's the third relay along from the left on the front row of relays. The part number on it could be 191 955 531 or it could start with 4A0 as mine did.

    Plug in new relay.

    To set the wipe interval:

    1. Turn on intermittant then turn off straight away.
    2. Turn back on and wait for the desired wipe interval
    3. Turn off and back on again.

That sets the time for the wipe interval. Easy huh!! They are available @ £21.92 inc vat delivered by 1st class post.

      Martyn,

I've seen these relays on sale before, they look like a great idea.
What sorta money can you do them for??

      Cheers

I've just fitted one of these. It's most likely me having a stupid moment or three - not for the first time - but for the life of me I can't get it to work.

            1. Turn on intermittant then turn off straight away.
Ok. On and off straight away. The wipers wipe.
            2. Turn back on and wait for the desired wipe interval.
Turn them back on (to intermittant). They wipe at a given (preset?) rate - I count slowly to 10 - in which time the wipers do about 4 (intermittant) wipes.
            3. Turn off and back on again.
Ok. Off and on - and they continue to wipe at the same (preset?) rate as in step 2, rather than at my much slower rate.

            Where am I going wrong?

            Ck.
Shocked, exhausted, hosed, bushed, dumped, chipped, mounted, filtered, gauged, packed, intermittantly wiped and braked. I mean broken. Now, about the car...

MartynF got the instructions slightly wrong.

              It should read:

              1. Turn on intermittant then turn off straight away.
              2. Wait for the desired wipe interval and turn back on.

              This sets the delay.

              HTH,

I bought one of these, but its a bit of a pain!
Setting the wipe interval seems a bit 'hit & miss', it doesn't always want to respond and keeps wiping at a default interval.
It also does one last wipe as I move the stalk to turn it off. Which is annoying on a dry screen.

Anyone else found this?. Maybe I bought a dubious relay. I did get it from VAGparts though.

Hey, I've never seen this one either!! I've always wished I could change the intermitted wipe speed on the car - it's always a bit too fast and squeaks like ****, so I end up flicking it manually. Damn, another one for the shopping list...

I get the exact same problem with the rear wiper, I usually give it a good long squirt of washer fluid, and that's usually though it still struggles sometimes. I'm gonna try rainex'ing and see if it makes it a bit easier for the wiper to move across the glass.

                        Cheers

I fitted one a few weeks ago and also had problems with Maryns 'interesting' instructions. However, 2 mins of playing around and I had it sussed, just as Ben describes above

I have to say that it works great Setting the interval is easy and I have timed it and it is spot on. The longest I could be bothered to measure so far was 30 seconds, but it was repeatedly damn accurate.

Mine never does the last wipe when turned off either

                              Cheers n
