Yeh, it was an option. In the 92 UrS4s that came to NAmerica, the US UrS4s got full leather seating and front and rear heated seats. The Canadian equivalents got leather, front heated seats and rear sunshade but no rear heated seats.

Good god those bumpers were fugly. Its interesting the likes and dislikes, they liked the brakes which is interesting as they are terrible. And disliked the gear change which i always found nice and smooth (though i've never driven a 5speed car). Steering is a weak point so i have to agree there.

We also have heated rear seats in our S4 which passengers always turn on, and never turn off again

Fortunately there are (or should be) some pressure (weight) sensitive switches in the underside of the rear seats that *should* shut the heaters off when the rear passengers leave. However, if you plop a heavy dog or briefcase back there with rotary switches on, you could have toasted dog or a smelly tuna sandwich (from your lunch, in the briefcase).

Those clever Germans, though it doesn't help my OCD which has me reaching back to check the switches

It was a common point of comparison (right or wrong) back in the day. And it didn't always win the comparison. Check this out:
