  • Propshaft Overhaul

During my recent clutch replacement I've had loads of others bits done at the same time. One of which was an overhaul of the propshaft.

As you can see in the pic below the centre bearing mount was a little bit worn

The bearing had torn completely away from the mount and was floating freely along the propshaft. This was something that happened during the accident long before I bought it (as was the sheared OS engine mounting bracket)

Now obviously i didn't really want to buy a new propshaft, sorry should read wait for one to come from germany, so I decided to try using the centre bearing listed in the propshaft thread started by alg.

I can confirm that both the centre bearing (Febi/Bilstein Part Nº 05196) and the CV joints (Löbro (OEM) CV-joint Part Nº 301142/Porsche Part Nº 923 332 032 00) are a straight swap. I don't have any pictures unfortunately as it was done whilst I was at work.

The centre bearing may need the holes elongating slightly to allow proper alignment but it is only by a couple of millimetres maximum.

As for prices I got mine at cost through my mechanic but I think the centre bearing should of been around £20 and the CV joints around £90 each. I'm sure there are cheaper places to get them from such as GSF or Euro.

I haven't had a chance to go out for a long test drive but it certainly feels a lot tighter and the clunk I used to get when taking up drive seems to have gone.

After being 'supposedly' diagnosed with a knackered gearbox, propshaft and rear diff i decided to do a bit of investigating because i wasn't convinced.
Had a very loud clunking/rattling noise from the front.
So i removed the propshaft, and found this... (camera phone pics )

Front CV joint on the prop was bone dry and generally completely shafted.
So a prop overhaul was needed. Both CV joints and centre bearing.
1st the centre universal joint needs splitting so these 2 circlips were taken out.

Next is this bolt which needs taking out to get the rest of the joint off and then access to the centre bearing.

The only problem i had was this collar fouled on the rubber housing of the new bearing, so i removed it by just tapping it off
              All clears ok now.

I tried getting the cv joints from ford using the numbers quoted in previous threads but they didnt match anything. Found a propshaft specialist just down the road from me who got the correct ones. They are the same as ford scorpio inner joints btw.

All back on now, it was pretty straightforward removing and re-installing the prop. The large heatshield had already been removed a while back so the exhaust didnt need taking off
Took it for a drive last night and all noises have gone. No more clunks like ben says.

But now the ABS light stays on and it wont boost over 1bar, Its been off the road for nearly 2 weeks so i guess its one of the sensors which is playing up. Anyone any ideas?

So much for my knackered gearbox
                        Rear diff still needs sorting.
6-speed conversion is still on the cards though

Those are two seperate problems as the ABS ECU is completely seperate from the Engine one.

Ok, thought that, just cant think whats causing low boost though.
Had a fault code for throttle position sensor but cleared it and now no codes stored.
