  • 01E paper gasket weeping

My gearbox has a slight annoying weep from the two sections bolted with the paper gasket. My question is it looks like it's had some gasket silicone seal on it ( black ) at some point - not sure if OE ) but is it poss to drain - as there's a plug , but just the one- undo these star bolts and have enough lift to re silicone the two parts ? Or better to remove a fit new paper gasket ? I'm not too keen on pulling gearbox apart if it's specialist etc.. Cheers

not simple task i am afraid . there are bearings, caps and sooo other manny things to undo before you will be able to remove that part. The black silicone is not oem. I think, at some point, the box was dismantled and installed wrong or gaskets were not renewed.

tricky part is to undo the bolt wich is fixing the input shaft bearing at the back of the box.
        with that removed...not too bad.
        Goodluck!

Cheers. Is that the bolt that's inside the housing ?

the JHM video will make this much easier when you decide to do it. as many trans's i have taken apart/rebuilt, i still watch it each time following along.

So I'm at the special tool 3275 stage ( which I don't have ) to extract the inner race so I can lift of end cover of the transmission, has anyone removed the cover without the race extracted? The bolt is removed and I wondered if the cover would lift off with race in situ ? Else I will order a puller .. Thanks
