  • ’91 3B Upgrade

    I’ve upgraded here ‘n’ there since mid-2005, but nothing too major. However, it’s getting close to being returned to me (end of January), so I thought I’d post an update and share the pics I have so far. When I last left the keys at Quattronics the spec was:
    * Porsche monoblocks up front (black) with 323mm A8 discs and DS2500 pads (yep, another BRY special)
    * Koni adjustable dampers
    * RS2 FARB and Whiteline RARB
    * Uprated diff, wishbone and subframe mounts
    * QRSport top mounts
    * Cees machined 3B flywheel
    * SPEC clutch
    * 034 short-shift kit
    * 034 3” turbo-back exhaust with stock-look exits
    * RS2 intercooler
    * RS2 airbox
    * MAF relocated to pressure side
    * 7A exhaust cam
    * Bosch 044 fuel pump
    * Metal head-gasket with ARP bolts
    * 2.5 bar MAP sensor
    * AutoMark remap
    * Silicone water and boost hoses plus MarkH mod
    * 10V radiator (to lose redundant secondary radiator pipework)
    * R134a air-con conversion
    * S8 alloys with 225/40/18 Eagle F1s
    * Ellipsoid headlamps
    * 6000k HIDs
    * Osram Diadem front indicators
    * Clear indicator lenses
    * Clear side repeaters
    * LED sidelights (great find, they match the HIDs perfectly)
    * Intermittent wiper relay
    * Lupo aero wipers and arms at the front
    * A few other small mods

    I hoped this setup broke the 300bhp barrier on the K24, but I never got round to a dyno to test it out.

    The original intension was to use Audi parts wherever possible (so mainly RS2 parts) and only deviating where there was a significant enough benefit. I wasn’t going for all-out power and minimising lag was a priority. I wanted the untrained eye to look at it, both from the outside and under the hood, and to not really be able to tell it was packing quite a punch. After a long chat with Corey, the new spec was:
    * Forged bottom end with SCAT rods, new piston rings and RS2 bearings
    * Gas-flowed head with inconnel oversize exhaust and stainless steel oversize inlet valves, Ti retainers and high rate springs
    * GT2871
    * RS2 or Wagner RS2 Evo exhaust manifold
    * MAF fabricated into inlet pipework
    * -4dB centre silencer
    * Track density engine and gearbox mounts
    * Rebuilt gearbox
    * Refresh a few engine bay items

    He was also going to fit a few items that I had been collecting (e.g. group buy VDO boost gauge, new fuel and water temp gauges, 7A cam cover, real late spec rear clusters) and he planned on throwing in a few items for me that he had lying around (e.g. ABY inlet manifold, new top mounts). Thanks Santa Corey.

    Anyway, so the build began. Well, stripping any. Gearbox went off to the gearbox man and the engine can out.

    As with most well-made plans, they change. An SQ exhaust manifold became available ( James) and I liked the thought of including this in the build (even though I suspected it might increase lag a tiny bit compared to an RS2 item). This led to the turbo changing from a GT2871 to GT3071. It also meant that I couldn’t keep my RS2 airbox and my downpipe needed fettling (it was going away to be ceramic coated anyway). Now the stock look was kinda out of the window, so I may as well go down the reverse manifold route (to reduce the lag a tiny bit) and if I was doing that I may as well go for a bigger intercooler too.

    I dropped some other late additions to Lincoln, like a Platinum headlining and some bits from Sal (e.g. cruise control, outside temp display) at the same time as collecting my alloys for me to have a go at refurbishing at my mates wheel business.

      I returned with my refurbished alloys (which I was pretty happy with given that I’d done most of the work) and the car looked very different!!

      Corey had previously been busy removing stuff.

        It looked like this.

        Yeah, something else I threw into the mix part-way through: a Nogaro full re-spray. I love that colour and had planned on doing it at a later stage, but with it being off the road I thought I’d get as much done as possible in one go. Plus there’s another reason which I’ll see if someone can work out later. A beer to the first person who guesses correctly.

          With a change of colour I decided to also have my front monoblocks refurbished, refinished in red and balanced off with a set for the rears too!

            Engine rebuild coming along nicely.

            The head's had a lot of work and I'm looking forward to seeing just how quick the GT3071 can spool.

              Corey wasn’t happy with the colour of the cam cover so it’s been taken off to be redone.

                      New intercooler in place. The cross-member’s been taken off to be painted the same as the bodywork.
