I'm curious but it didn't give any information like standby time or even how it's powered.
I use the tk102 tracker which can be picked up on eBay for as little as £5. It uses a mobile phone battery and sim card, as long as there's credit on the card when you ring it, it'll text you back it's coordinates and also does movement, vibration sensing and geo fencing.
I'm considering a more serious device like this http://skytag-gps.co.uk/ given the amount of money I've invested in Mental Wheels...

RS2 - LHD on the road again
RS2 - reduced to component parts

You definitely want one that's mains powered with battery back-up and uses the mobile network (GSM). They're basically just custom packaged mobile phones with an integrated simcard.
The super expensive one's work with VHF in case the car's put in an underground car park or container and have signal jamming detection to stop criminals using GSM/GPS jamming devices, and use wireless tags that if aren't with the driver alert the owner and then the vehicle can be remotely immobilised. Heavy subscription costs though!!!

By "mains" I take it you mean a 12v feed from the car battery, rather than.. erm. 230v from the house
I was looking at one of these, which you hook up to 12v and bung a sim card into.
Then I guess you just find somewhere to hide it, where there's reasonable access to 12v.

I've been looking at the TK102, this one in particular:-
Yes GiffGaff is good for random/occasional use. I have had several of their sim's for low-use devices. Currently 3 are still active.
You do need to make a call "occasionally" to keep the number active, but they do email to warn you before cutting it off.
I thought I'd seen them that cheap on eBay but it seems I'm wrong, £10 looks to be the cheapest from China, I payed £15 from an English seller because I'm impatient.
What SIM card are you using? All the PAYG SIMS now seem to be limited to 30days before they need topping up.
Im on giff gaff but one text is 7p so it can gobble the credit if you send a lot of commands, a good network would be 3 because they are 2p a text but most tk102's stipulate that you use a 2g sim. I've never tried a 3g sim yet so can't comment.
And credit won't dissappear on a PAYG sim after 30days.
