  • My Second B6 S4

I didn't realise there was a sub-section for these on this sit until just now, so well pleased there is...

This was my first one - ran it for 2 years and sold in 2010, I had it fettled at MRC with a Miltek Stainless Non-Res system with racing de-cat downpipes, lowered 35mm, AEZ 19's, Inlet flap modification and rolling remap.

    Sounded wonderful:

    This is the current one:

Nice. How much did the remap and zorst give you on terms of power & torque. Was it noticeably different in terms of throttle sensitivity etc ?

Not a lot to be honest... my Noggy made 334 on the rollers before the map - which is 10 down on stock at 134,000 miles, after the map and mods it made 370.

Oh, I also had an RS4 Rear Ant-rollbar fitted, made a big difference to the handling!

These cars are notoriously difficult to tune unless you spend mega bucks...

JHM in the States are the go-to shop for any mods and they break down like this:

      Quick & Cheap:
JHM short-shifter, filter, brakes, RSAP hands-free, JHM Racing Pedals, RS4 Rear ARB

      Expensive & Small gains:
Miltek exhaust System, Remap, JHM Inlet Spacers, JHM Inlet Manifold,

      Big Gains & Big Dosh:
JHM Supercharger (PES one is pants)

      Expensive & nice:
flat bottomed steering wheel, RNS-E (if you don't have it, my second does), Poly Bushes, JHM Oil cooler kit

** There is a good B6/B7 S4 owners group on Facebook by the way

Thats a good gain for chip and exhaust on a non turbo engine and about the 10% to be expected really - much of which will be exhaust I suppose. Hopefully my pending cold air intake will bring another 10% (joke).

I have the RS4 RARB and bushes ready to fit - probably wait until I am doing removable tow bar (for bike rack) for that one so I don't have to take the back end off twice in the same year !

I won't be going down the supercharged route - the beast is both omplex and rapid enough for me.

The JHM oil cooler kit is outside my scope as well - see that for hot countries and/or with track day duties... I would never be thrashing mine so hard as to put oil temps into the level where I need that bit of kit.

Personally speaking I think the flat bottomed steering wheel looks a bit pants but is nice that you get buttons for RNS-E and BT integration - the regular MFSW looks even worse - I have the non buttoned wheel which looks best to my eyes.

I can't be doing with Facebook either lol... do you spanner your own machine or take to a man that does ?

So be honest - that non resonated Milltek does sound great on the back roads but is it boomy or intrusive on the Motorway ?

Did you take off primary CATs as well on yours Lee ?

its all a question of taste with visual mods, aside from wheels, I don't really like tinkering too much with the aesthetics of cars, I too have the steering wheel with no buttons and I like it, my first one had them but the basic symphony stereo, glad I got the mix I did TBH.

My plan is either to sell the S4 in about 18 months and treat myself to an S8 V10, Maserati Quattroporte or Jaguar XK 4.2 (newer shape) because all will be within my 15K budget at that point. But if I try all and decide to keep the S4, its getting that JHM supercharger...

The exhaust was good, lovely when driving hard, through the blackwall tunnel and starting it up in the morning. It was loud as hell with the pre-cats gone (I ended up with the race downpipes so no cats anywhere - I fixed the videos so you can see them properly now) but I never minded it. If you are more discrete then I would say get the resonated Miltek and leave the standard downpipes with the primary cats in it.

Failing all that, for a cheaper system, get a custom made one at MIJ Exhausts in Wallsall. They have some V8 Audi videos on the site, their cost is good and from the system they built for my B3 1.8T I can vouch for their work - very, very good.

With all the hassle I had with my B3, I wanted a car that was solid, rarely went wrong and when it did, I would just give it to my specialist garage to do (which at the moment is Elite Motors in Northampton as the mechanic I use runs his own B6 S4 estate)

To be honest, this one has had no issues, the only major issues I had with the previous one was the usual dual mass/clutch failure that tends to happen between 100K-130K

Finally, my full Miltek system with race downpipes, custom MRC tune and Dyno came in at £1900 - thats a lot IMO for 10% power but I didn't mind at the time.

You can by a Res or Non Res Milly for about £750 on ebay - were talking downpipes back... thats what I will be doing and and getting Elite to fit it. Its purely for Sonic purposes.

Is your manual or tip? if its a tip the non-res drones at 3K so you have no choice but to get a Resonated system. It really is awful on a tip

Good info - mine is manual and the previous owner had the clutch done. Think I will be doing mine on a gradual basis - starting with primary CAT removal (or gutting) by which I mean the ones in the downpipes... then have the secondary cats connected by V-band or similar for quick release options if I want to be really noisy.

Word of advice, don't gut the pre-cats, you get a bad raspy metal rattly sound... I know, I did mine and regretted it straight away as the inside of the cats isn't smooth and its quite jagged in there, the airflow becomes really turbulent and causes vibrations lower down the flow

OK - good advice that... 'race' downpipes for me next then... hopefully a spacer on the O2 sensor downstream will avoid the dreaded engine light but that can be cured at remap time... as can the stupid routine that cuts power when left foot braking - I really hate that !

Uhhh no - not looked for any such tricks yet... The car stuck the knife into me today - but it was my fault... When refitting the airbox snorkel to the lock carrier I must have snagged and disturbed that ill-designed bonnet cable. I only discovered this when I popped out at 3pm to check fluids before an early start tomorrow... Pulled the bonnet release and nothing. What a total bee-atch but the good ol internet gave enough hints to get me through it. Needs a really special spanner to do the trick but I was able to bolt two together and get what I needed. 4hrs later, bonnet open and cable locked into place with another magic tywrap and job done. On close inspection it seems like someone damaged a retaining clip for the cable so when I snagged it I angled the ball bit that actually pulls the latch out of position. Stupid thing cost me 4hrs of my life but I managed to stay calm and need break any trim.

ha ha ha, I had that, didn't know what do to, happened at the same time as my dual mass failing on the 1st car, so booked it into the body shop expecting them to cut off the bonnet, but they found a way in over 15 minutes and solved it - I still don't know what they did.

bloody things, its bad enough there is no room, but then it won't let you get to the little room there is and denies access!

15mins is impressive - the usual trick for non V8 B6 doesn't work - I couldn't even see the latch from underneath - never mind get a long lever onto it. They must have BTDT before and had the perfect tool to hand... still damn quick though in 15mins unless their tool also had ratchet action. I spent time taking off the inner wing to see if that gave me any insight but that was waste of time. When I knew the right path and built the right tool it took about 30mins. Experience is everything on these things !

yeah, they are amazing cars, really flexible to drive rather than out and out quick, but they have their quirks. The B7 RS4 is a lovely motor but aside from a D2 S4, there can't be much better out there for the price and the bang for bucks ratio.

Once you learn their issues, its plain sailing. take it off long service (keeps the tensioner issue at bay) and expect a chow through coil packs, solve the inlet air box issue and aux rad. budget for a clutch and dual mass and thats it... rock solid otherwise.

                            Great cars

Just an update on this, my car is getting its milted soon, and all round discs and pads (going for grooved and drilled), I have an ABT chrome knob to go on as well - I will be putting pics up when I do this.

Its also going to need a little bit more work with an outer CV riverside needing to be done, plus its already swallowed a wishbone, control arms and track rod ends with bushes... not cheap I can tell you!
