  • Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 9 refurbish

I have bought a few months ago an Evo 9.
I was told it's an RS because it has a mechanical differential ... and because it has a short 5-gear gearbox, and it was made only for the US people.
But when I looked on wikipedia, they are saying that RS models must have aluminum roof - mine doesn't. So I don't think it's an RS anymore.

I bought it from a lady, it's an USA model, imported by a polish guy from the US, and then bought by this lady from Poland.
I knew the car since it entered Romania, so I had the courage to buy it.
I drove the car for a few weeks, floor it hard, it didn't fail in any way, so I felt confident about my purchase.
The car has around 330 HP - i have been told.

    Modifications - bigger down pipe
    - carbon/kevlar protection under the engine
-fuel line + brake line protection
    -fuel tank protection...
    -ac has been removed
-steering wheel replaced with a sport one
-abs has been disabled from the ECU
    and that's about it.

The only down size of the car ... is ... the rust. The car has rust everywhere, it's not hard rust, it's only superficial rust and it made me crazy.
So I decided to make a full refurbish of the car.

So the plan is like this:

    1) change every fluid of the car PENDING... FLUIDS BOUGHT...FLUIDS RECEIVED...
    2) change timing belt kit PENDING... PARTS ORDERED...
    3) change brake discs + pads if necessary PENDING...
    4) remove all the rust PENDING... POR 15 PAINT BOUGHT...POR 15 PAINT RECEIVED...
    5) repaint car PENDING...
    6) repaint brake calipers + wheels PENDING...
    7) new tires PENDING...
    8) original steering wheel with airbag PENDING...STEERING WHEEL ORDERED...STEERING WHEEL RECEIVED...
    9) get a new AC system PENDING...PARTS ORDERED...PARTS RECEIVED...
    10) make the ABS work again PENDING... PARTS ORDERED...PARTS RECEIVED...

Number 1 on my list, the fluids.
I have contacted Opieoils and I asked him for suggestions. So after he kindly offered my guidance, I have purchased the following:

Millers Oils CRX 75w-90 NT Competition full synthetic transmission oil -5 Litres
      SKU: 00067639
      1
Millers Oils CRX 75w-90 NT Competition full synthetic transmission oil -1 Litre
      SKU: 00067638
      1
Castrol React SRF Racing Brake Fluid -2 x 1 Litre
      SKU: 00120877
      1
Motul INUGEL OPTIMAL Ready to use cooling liquid Anti-corrosion and anti freeze -5 Litres
      SKU: 00001135
      1
Motul INUGEL OPTIMAL Ready to use cooling liquid Anti-corrosion and anti freeze -1 Litre
      SKU: 00067545
      2
Millers Oils Millermatic ATF SP III -5 Litres
      SKU: 00067626
      1
Millers Oils NANODRIVE CFS 5w-40 NT Full Synthetic Engine Oil -1 Litre
      SKU: 00096469
      2
Millers Oils NANODRIVE CFS 5w-40 NT Full Synthetic Engine Oil -5 litres
      SKU: 00096470
      1

For now, this is enough. The changing of the fluids will be made after everything else has been done.

The most important part, number 4.
The guy with who I am refurbishing the car is forum member PasBogdan.
Bogdan has started to take the car a part. He will remove almost everything from the car, engine, gearbox, interior, etc. and search for all the rust parts, sand blast them locally and paint over with Por 15.
I have bought all the anti rust paint arsenal from :

Today we made some tests with his sand blasting machine.
There is some nasty rust at the top of the front dampers, and we sand blasted a little there.
We also sand blasted a little the brake caliper and the nuts of the left front wheel, and the wheel.
You can see Bogdan in action here:

              I'm here yes!

He's a lucky owner to have a US spec evo 9 as 8 and 9's came with LSD mechanical diff and other things.

Is a good car and project

I'd leave it stock ,then he can take 400&400 which is very nice and cheap.

I am not doing any modifications to the engine or to the ECU map.
I was told it has a stage 1 remap, from 286 HP to around 330. That's enough for me.

nice car . do you own a quattro /s2 ? anyway all i know is i love blowing evos away in my A1 [not ex-works] quattro tarmac rally car . when the fq330 were still newish my mate bought one in 2005 which is the first year my rally car was built , so it was rude not to compare cars on the road , to be fair the EVO wasnt far behind the quattrobut couldnt get past. since then in the last 10yrs the audi has got much faster and now blows away proper grp a rally EVOS . AUDI RULE

He had aby 400+ hp s2 with stiff h&r+bilsetein suspension,18 inch wheels with good tires.Nice car but...needed to much old school driving techniques to be ok on tight cornering.Needed smaller turbo or als.So...sold it.Power resonable, road resonable but hairpins disaster(as any quattro with peak boost at 3800-4k rpm and no als)So the power is not all.The quattro require weight transfer techniques, left foot braking while right foot mentain boost/or als.

                              Had 3b s2 "homefried",my car now.
HAS b2 cq and aan engine project after evo,was my project
HAS b2 90 q and aan engine project after the cq,was my project

So he abused some quattro and says evo is more balanced. Will see

Hope the b2 cq we will build with rs2 setup(no more) and maybe als will be the car he will love the most.
