  • RS2 Tranmissions - CGR vs CRB

Legend has it the RS2s came with the CRB 6 speed with the wider first gear and the necked shaft to help handle the stresses of 6000 RPM clutch drops. However, I know that is not true. I have done a number of RS2 build tags and several of the early 94s (e.g. March or April 94 builds) came with the CGR 6 speed that was being used in the S2 Avant.

Question: How many others with 94 RS2s have the CGR transmission and if not was there a running change to the CRB within the 94 production run? My friend Kate does not acknowledge the existence of the CGR in the RS2 (probably a lot of failures under warranty).

    Just pursuing the history stuff...

Look for the build tag in the boot, under the load deck and carpet, beside the spare tyre:

Mine is 1995 RS2 (possibly built in 1994, though).
According to the build tag, my car came with CGR transmission. So I guess some 1995 cars have CGR, too.

According to Charlie Smith (great Audi/Porsche guy who passed away last year (or 2011), there were four main shafts with first gear:

The original main shaft, narrow first gear, not flexilble shaft, 01E 311 105 G
                The wider 1st, not flexible (...01E 311 105J),
                the flexible 1st (...01E 311 105E) and
                the flexible wide 1st (...01E 311 105H).

Looking at the info about the CGR that is available now, up to transmission number 43795, the main shaft was 01E 311 105J, the wider, not flexible shaft. After 43795, the main shaft in the CGR was the 01E 311 105H, the wider 1st on the flexible shaft.

I asked my friend Kate in the parts department and she said that the 01E 311 105E was dropped on 01/08/1999 in favour of the 01E 311 105H (the best one) and a 01E 311 431A inner ring (?)

The CRB seems to have always used the 01E 311 105H

Okay, I'm confused. Do you mean CGR or CRB? CBR is a Honda motorcycle IIRC.

Need more info. Do you have the SN of the tranmission, e.g. CGR 00nnnn?

Just checked a few of the RS2 build tags that I have done for people. It looks like the breakpoint betweenthe CGR vs CRB was somewhere between SN00063n and SN0009nn.

The 63n built in mid-Oct. 94 has the CGR and the 9nn built in early(ish) Nov. 94 has the CRB. Need more data to pin-point the change more precisely.
