  • Timing job, with 3256 tool ?!

Hi all , quick one I'm doing cambelt on my ABY and bought the gen audi tool 3256 but can't suss it for the life of me , I know it's a tool only to loosen crank bolt and not hold it at TDC, but I can't see where the bolt screws into ? I'm turning the tool and crank and it's arch only lines up with one of the stub mount holes, but the tool is too short and sits at least 2 inches off of the block ???? can someone point me in the right direction.

The 3256 is not the right tool. Read through this for suggestions to make it nearly right!

Cheers, thought there was too many pulleys on bottom crank, making it too deep on an ABY ...as all pics I can find are AAN , sheesh , so longer bolt and spacers.

You CAN use the 3256 on the ABY motor with a little addition from the toolbox - I did it on mine some months back when unlocking the bottom before I lifted out the engine.
I need to find a photo.

Here goes - use the snub mount with the rubber removed and a sturdy deep socket placed over it to create a counter-hold. I actually had a 3/8 extension through the hole of the snub mount as well to fill the void. Another tip, not shown, is a large G-clamp to keep the 3256 tool nicely in place on the pulley while you are schwinging on the bar.

Cheers Paul think I've sussed it , all bolted up with support on threaded bolt , just need a big 1/2 drive socket now as I've snapped my extension with the scaffold pole attached 😖

Another note the ECU and TCAs are on the way to you ..

Top tip - go for a 3/4" socket and schwing bar - there is monster torque involved and you will damage all but the very finest quality 1/2" tools.

Good stuff on the ECU etc
