  • Mr Simmonds 3B lite project.

Right I thought it time I finally post up what I'm doing with my 1990 S2 on here. I've had the car since November 2007, it was advertised locally and I went too have a look out of curiosity. I was fairly familiar with S2's as well as Audi's and Volkswagen's in general, however I wish I'd found this site before jumping in and purchasing the car as I think with a bit more knowledge and haggling I may well have been able to save myself a couple of hundred quid.

For the first couple of months I had a few problems with unpredictable running namely a intermittent miss-fire under boost and occasionally feeling really flat. These problem were completely cured by changing the plug leads, plugs, MAF and getting shot of the useless cone filter, after this the car ran really nicely. I drove it for most of 2008 and covered about 12,000 problem free miles.

I'm not worried about removing them as whilst the fixing points on the chassis legs are substantial the one's on the bulk head are quite flimsy so I can't see it making any difference to rigidity.

The rims are 7" X 17" made by Toora and fitted with 205 45 17 Toyo's, I'd have to check the weight but if I remember right it's less than 18kg each with the tyre's

The tyre's are T1-R's, I have a mate in the trade and he can get these really cheap, in hind sight though I wish I'd gone for 215/45/17' 888's as the 205/45/17's actually gear the car down slightly.

225/45 is closer to 205/55 surely but your smaller wheels will help acceleration - though reduce top speed of course...

Nice work - pretty OCD alright in the weight loss department.

I like it, looking forward to seeing how you get on with the diet (well the cars diet!). How light are you hoping to go? Fibreglass panels etc?

I found a site that converts tyre sizes and give's the rolling radius in mm, apparently a 205/45/17 has a 3mm smaller radius than the standard 205/55/16's, 215/45/17 are pretty much spot on and 225/45/17 are about 1mm larger than standard. Will try and find the site as it's quite interesting.

The car is a LOT more snappy in first, second and third gear with the smaller wheels/tyres compared to when I was running it with my 8" X 17" Avus's and 225/45/17 Continentals.

but 7" rim and R-tires is really narrow IMO you will burn up the tires really fast if you have some speed and power around the track, but for some trackdays now and then it´s just fine

I'd love to be able to replace the bonnet, maybe the doors and possibly the wings with carbon fibre, as this would save loads of weight, however I really can't afford to do so at the moment and even if I could I kinda feel the money would be better spent extracting more power from the engine. If I come across fibre glass panels at the right price then I'd be sorely tempted, especially the bonnet as it's heavy and mass in the wrong place. Target weight is 1300kg without driver. I really want to get shot of the sunroof but as yet can't think of a satisfactory way of doing this.
