This project has a religious tone as three miraculous things happened today -

    1. I found the time, energy (and bravery) to actually open the door of my tired, soggy and rather neglected S2 - this is the car that started the journey for S2 Central - the car that eventually spawned the S2 Forum I suppose. I cannot let this old machine dissolve on my driveway !

    2. I think I have root caused the sunroof leak (99% sure this time) - more of that later !

    3. In a psychological test of 'does she want to run' - this was the result of turning the key for 1st time in about a year - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2i1Ykn3m0gg

Its a joke name for a potential project I suppose but this is very encouraging - and the name might even stick !

Some of you will remember the horrible times I had trying to find a leak in the roof area... water was dripping down from front right corner of sunroof and making the drivers seat and floor wet.

After the engine fired up so willingly and my notion to restore this old girl into some kind of form that I can actually drive and enjoy again - I took to removing the headlining for a proper look at the sunroof area. The cloth is looking well shabby by now anyway.

Sure enough there is lots of evidence of water coming through at both front corners actually. See the pics attached.

While I was popping out the sunroof control panel I inadvertently opened it a tad... I pushed the button the other way to close it and it made all the normal noises etc to close it. I noticed the manual crank handle in there and decided to see how tight the mechanism felt and it was much tighter than it should be - I was able to hand crank it shut about a quarter turn tighter. This got me wondering... if the sunroof motor has been maxing out and not closing it 100% then maybe thats where water was creeping in.

Out with the hosepipe and after several good douses of water later - I cannot see or feel one drop of water entering through the roof now - not even near the rustiest parts of the sunroof assembly. Amazing and annoying all at the same time.

I remain slightly dubious as it almost seems too good to be true.

All that said - I am of the mood to bring this machine back to health as a kind of stripped out rally replica. Rally cars are my first automotive passion I suppose...

I won't be do anything outrageous engine wise... Lots of stripping and preparation first... Need to check there is no serious rot on this old machine before investing in a cage etc.

The sunroof is a mahoosive assembly above your head - even if it is now watertight - I will be looking at creative ways to remove it and fill the hole in the roof with a flat plate - heck I don't care if its riveted in at this stage.

So the plan is kind of rough guys... it depends a lot on how good/bad the body is... From visual PoV I have talked about the ABT kit in the past here, but the cost is painful so I am not going all out for that unless there is a great fund injection along the way. The main things to try and achieve this winter are to get it stripped out and seriously lightened. I made contact with a local fabrication guy (he does a lot of local rally cars and has work backed up for 9 months) about welding in a cage. I want this thing to be strong enough so that if I ever do venture onto a track or hill climb that I will be safe and legal. By the time I am finished, my son should be driving so it needs to be safe for him too - he may be braver than me !

Suspension wise, it will be pretty stock save for some coil-overs and decent dampers. Uprated clutch & brakes... Maybe delete the ABS and brake bomb which is past its best..

Engine wise 400bhp max will be absolutely plenty - can do that without much exotica. I want it revving really well though so it will be off to JP for some black art balancing etc. Probably go for Carsten manifolds and decent intercooler to keep air temps in check. Turbo is TBD but I want it to be a torque monster - well as much as it can be on the 2226cc block. I see local hero DieselDes doing some research on this so that is always good !

Couple pf pics for the records of removing the headlining.

The sun visor brackets have a little cover to be prised off first - they are easily broken if you are looking to re use them so be careful.

The visor bracket on the inside has a single wire (for the light) which you need to unclip from a connector lurking in the the sunroof control panel.

After the sun visors are off, tease off the big trim clip along the top edge at the front window.

Then unscrew the grab handles above the front doors and unclip the A-pillar trims - again care required if looking to reuse those as the clips are kind of fragile at 20+ yrs old.

The headlining pulls away easily enough... leaving some inevitable traces of glue here and there... I was kind of amazed how big and cumbersome the sunroof assembly looked.

Internally she looks mighty shabby... there is a clear patch on the drivers seat where it was SO wet with rain water that the fungus stayed away in that area.

Doubt if I will re use the factory seats as they are so heavy but if I can salvage / restore them to good shape they should be great for someone else.
