  • Instrument cluster help/advice

    Hi all,
I'm looking for help and/or advice regarding the instrument cluster in my cabrio.

Basically, the temp gauge isn't working at all and the fuel gauge has a mind of its own so I can never really trust how much fuel is in the car!

I have bought (some time ago) another cluster which was second hand and that's what's in the car now with the issues I have mentioned above.

The original cluster which I still have also has the same issues, but in addition the mileage and trip counter don't work.

So I'm getting a bit fed up and don't really want to buy another second hand cluster which will more than likely have the same issues.

So I contacted a local cluster repair company and they quoted me £211 to fully repair the unit and it will be guaranteed too.
Now I obviously don't want to spend that sort of money, but there is a part of me that just wants piece of mind and have it sorted. So should I do it?

I'm sure I'm not alone with this, so I just wanted to know what other peeps have done in the past to overcome this?

Sorry for my life story, but thanks in advance for your time!

Sounds like it could be an earth fault. Temp and fuel gauge will show a value based on voltage between 0-5v (I think 5V)

Either way an earth fault will cause gauge to read min max etc as earth is made/lost. Could be inside cluster but if another set are doing the same then sounds like it's an earth in the car.

Thanks for the input mate. If that's the case then where do I start to check?

I'm afraid my electrical skills aren't great. Have a mate who is awesome who looks after my electrics but he uses all the layouts on S2 central to get everything sorted.

Temp and fuel gauges behaving erratically it's a common and easy fixable issue.
Had it on mine and after changing temp sensors and floating sender I found the solution on Audicabrio.de
It does'nt surprise me the two clusters are showing the same issue they all do sooner or later....

          Get your instrument cluster out.
Loose the screws (two each) that are holding the gauges on the cluster, do not remove the gauges.
Use a thin file or a thin sand paper and gently sand the contacts where those screws are touching on the board.
For a long lasting solution get some grover washers of the right size and put them between screws and cluster board
          Tighten the screws.

          Enjoy your know working gauges.

For the old cluster with not working tacho and speedo.... Donno unfortunately.

Smells to me more like a supply or earth fault if two differnt clusters are misbehaving the same way.

If this was about one cluster then I would go for that first but apparently two clusters behaving badly in the same car. Suppose is possible that Vreg is dead in both. Easy enough to swap right enough.

There's a voltage regulator on the board in the cluster itself. Looks like a 1cm square with three legs. Check that the solder joints are all ok. Just be methodical take photos for reverse assembly and get some decent solder. PM me if you need any other help.

From my experience I will still put my two cents on the screws that are holding the two gauges and then their poor contact with the board.
It's a well covered viral defect on the Cabriolets.
On mine I went all the way to change:
                    Temp sensor
                    Voltage regulator
                    Fuel sender
Swapping gauges from another cluster which got it solved for a while...
To get some grover washers and a bit of gentle sanding on the contacts it's an easy and costless try.... Have a go.
So far other two Cabriolets from our Club encounter the same issue and solved with this solution.

Here's an how to guide from Audicabrioinfo.de credits to them.
It's in german but pictures are helping plenty.

PS - let me know if you need help repairing the voltage regulator... that or I might take a spare cluster off your hands as long as it has auto check module for S2.

                          Hi Paul,

I have two clusters, so hopefully I will make a good one out of the two, but they are both the older style without auto check I believe? They don't have the display at the top that shows the symbols, instead they have the lights that show water temp etc.

I have purchased a voltage regulator (recently) which is in the current cluster at the moment. I'm guessing that this should still be ok...?
