  • Tiptronic launch help 0-60

    Hi ...

Wondering if anyone has experience/suggestions for fastest way to "launch" a car with Audi Tiptronic gearbox from standstill.

    I have a 3.0 tdi A5.

1- put it in sport and floor it
2- put it in drive and floor it (any difference?)
3- put it in "manual" and use the paddle shifters.
    4- use the electronic handbrake.
5- try holding it with left foot on footbrake..
    6- Turn traction control off??.

    Any thoughts??

my A6q 2.5TDI was realy slow off the line, most likely to protect the drivetrain. holding it with left on the brake while right on the throttle would result in the ECU throttling down... the 3.0 has even more torque, so I'll have to agree with Dave (off course)

Year that's the thing.. the Tiptronic means it's VERY slow from standstill... Obviously once it's moving it's incredible. The official 0-60 is 5.9 secs, and even given manufacturer's hype I'm sure that would be achievable if you could get over the one-second lag caused by the Tiptronic.

I have an allroad 2.5 TDI and it's like Henkjan says, if I press the brakes with my left and give it full throttle the ECU takes the revs down. BUT!! I accidentally found this out; press the brakes with my left foot, full throttle, ECU takes the revs down, AND THEN release the gas pedal and then give it full throttle again and it revs up! Wait a sec or two until the engine won't rev higher, then I release the brakes and the car rockets off the start line

This all sounds like an easy way to bork the gearbox IMO. If you want to take off quickly, push the loud pedal down quicker

Doubt you can sensibly, e-throttle is probably calibrated to control torque output to protect the transmission.

If the transmission can't handle the torque the engine produces then the transmission is simply too weak, and I doubt that.

The only thing to watch out for when doing like I described is not do stay on the brake pedal for too long at full throttle, then the torque converter would put too much heat into the fluid and it can damage the fluid and then the transmission.

I used to own an A7 3.0 tdi with the 7-speed transmission, it had launchcontrol.
Depending on what year your A5 is, search for launchcontrol in the mmi handbook

                  Edit:
Guess I had the S-tronic, so it might not be an option for your transmission

Hardly, torque-limiting engines in low gear so you can run a lighter/smaller box has been around for donkey's years.

Smaller/lighter gearbox = less fuel use, the aim of just about every manufacturer these days, even if they do fabricate their figures.

I'm asking the question in my head "Why would you want to launch a 3.0 diesel A5?!"

I had one of these for a while. The throttle response off the line wasn't great. You really had to be aggressive to get it to shift.

Does your car have drive select ? Dynamic mode always helped it a bit

Maybe it's my language... I'm not trying to race or blow the car up... I'm just curious about getting away from a standstill faster... as the Tiptronic means pulling away from stop is VERY slow.

Surely the words launch and tiptronic should never be in the same sentence !

Seriously though - I am pretty sure that the Audi software will be doing all sorts of torque limiting things at 'launch' to ensure the transmission does not explode and driveshafts to not twist. There *might* be some tuning specialists who can tweak the gearbox and engine controllers to improve things, but you would need to be very careful to pick something proven not to drastically reduce the reliability of the drivetrain as a result.

I recently got a double-upgrade at AVIS to an A3 with latest & greatest flappy-paddle tiptronic box... sure that thing could be faster off the line, but the speed of gear-changes was staggeringly fast and smooth - I was really impressed by that. An RS3 or TTRS running that system with the 7K engine must be a hoot !
