  • URS4 air-con pipe work problem

Before charging up the air-con I started swapping o-rings, but have a problem. Item 3, compressor end nut is too big?

        Factory condensors are different:

R12 condensor (to about Sept 1992 build dates):

R134a condensor (after Sept 1992 build dates):

Assuming (?!) that your A/C compressor is also R134a, then the Item 3 hose should be the 4A0260701AA hose, not the 4A0260701E R12 Item 3 hose.

That would be great. Thinking back there is a chance I've fitted R12 compressor I had on my first S4.

                  R12 UrS4 Compressor = 4A0260805C

                  R134a UrS Compressor = 4A0260805AH

Can't see PN unfortunately. Can I get away just getting correct hose?

You should. Since R12 is banned, both R12 and R134a hoses can carry the R134a. Get the one that suits you. Strange that they both have the same fitting radiator side...

What's the difference between R12 and R134a, that R12 is banned?

I'll try and chase down the hose

R134a was developed in 1993 (?), as a replacement for R12. R12 was deemed too toxic and environmentally polluting. Conspiracy theorists stick to the version that it was to take out USSR/Russia from the business as R12 was mass produced there.

R12 is much more potent, it eats up the R134a system from the inside. While at the same time, R12 system can easily hold R134a, you just need to swap the AC compressor oil and the dryer can (sometimes even hoses, depends on the manufacturer). Also the refill fittings differ, but there are plenty of adapter kits floating around.

                            Ah I see, interesting.

I'd like to think that my '92 S4 had a stickter that said something along the lines of "converted to R134A" in which case compressor should be R134A Why can't it just be easy?

                              You didn't read well.

So the compressor from the 92 could be a R12 compressor and therefore the R134a hose does not fit it.
