  • 2001 Facelift E39 M5

    Hi All,

Probably not the best forum for this but more the merrier!

Here I have for sale my 2001 E39 M5 which I have owned since April 2013. Due to the addition of our first child and a recently purchased 2004 RS6 Avant, unfortunately only one V8 car in the family is financially viable. So, simply due to the practicality of the RS6 the M5 must go.

I purchased the car with 132k miles, now on 140,500, there is one month tax left which will not be getting renewed as going off the road for the winter if it does not sell.

The M5 for me is a far better car to drive, instant throttle response, far more comfortable for day to day use and soaks up any pot holes and irregularities on the road with ease. The RS6 is a lot more crashy over uneven ground even with all new suspension fitted!!

    Anyhow, more about the M5.

For a 13 year old car it's in great condition both mechanically and body wise. It's not showroom condition as it does have some minor age related marks but generally very good .It has FSH with both main dealer and specialists and an extensive folder full of receipts for work done over the years.

Most the big hitters have been replaced on this car, quite a lot of them recently.

In my time of ownership I have replaced the following parts, these came to over 2k and include-

    4 X FRONT SUSPENSION ARMS
    1 X REAR CONTROL ARM
    FRONT AND REAR BRAKE DISCS
    FRONT AND REAR BRAKE PADS
ALL WHEELS FULLY REFURBISHED AND SPRAYED IN SHADOW CHROME
    FRONT TYRES
    WATER PUMP
    THERMOSTAT
    GEARBOX MOUNTS
    VANOS HIGH PRESSURE HOSES
    FUEL FILTER
    OIL AND OIL FILTER
    POLLEN FILTER
    WINDSCREEN WASHER HOSES
    WIPER BLADES
    SERPINTINE BELT
ALL IDLERS AND ROLLERS REMOVED AND BEARINGS REPACKED WITH GREASE
    4 X WHEEL ALIGNMENT

All parts that I have fitted are Lemforder and/or BMW genuine quality, fully receipted to prove money spent and work done.

Prior to me owning the car it has had a new clutch at 120k, new propshaft bearing, both VANOS units replaced, new CPS sensor fitted, engine remap, muffler delete with two aftermarket silencers fitted resulting in a lovely burble but not offensive. Also many more bits and pieces have been fitted over the years. Basically anything the car has needed has been done.

The car is smooth and pulls very strong from low down with a nice flat torque curve. The performance of these cars is still impressive even by todays standard.

It barely goes through any oil, getting 2-3 k between tops ups which is good for these cars as they are known to go though oil.

The VANOS are nice and quiet with no leaks.

The car is fully loaded with all usual refinements, electric everything, full black leather, chrome trim, 6 speed manual, widescreen nav, etc etc.

I'm sure i have missed plenty but that gives a good overview of the components replaced.

There are a couple of outstanding issues that i simply haven't had time to sort, they're nothing major but if i don't sell the car i will sort these out over the winter.

I got an advisory for a weeping diff so this will need doing, also there is a front parking sensor that needs replacing.
The boot lid soft touch button works intermittently, this hasn't bothered me too much as i just use the key if it plays up.
There is small patch of rust coming through on the driver door, not too bad as yet but to look tip top will need addressing.

I think that covers everything guys so any further questions just drop me a line.

I work away so can't always be contacted by phone but always have email access.
    My mob is 07786 445 347

I live in North Lanarkshire and looking for around £7495ono

    Thanks for looking
    Gordon

      RS6 Teaser

      Hi Anthony,

Both E39 M5 and C5 RS6 were cars that i always wanted to own, however, i never set out to own both at the same time!!! he he

If you ever decide to go down the RS6 route i have a nice example that you might be interested in and has all the relevant and important history in place. It's an 04 plate Avant in Grey, 107k with full history , gearbox full overhaul at 95k, DRC removed last year and replaced with KONI's adjustables, full timing belt change last year at 103k, all VAG genuine parts, new suspension arms fitted to the front axle, upper (front and rear), two new arms on rear axle (needed these for alignment purposes, old ones were seized) new top mounts all round, 4 x goodyear eagle F1's with about 500 miles on them. Both intercoolers were removed and JB welded as they are prone to leak, all nice and air tight now.

The car goes good with a stage 1 remap on it, roughly 500bhp/500lb/ft

Like all my toys they get well looked after but an immenent house move is on the cards next year so both V8's must go at some point.

Only my trusty S2 will survive, she will never go for sale!!!

If you ever want to chat just give me a call, i can talk M5 and RS6 all day long, hehe.

      *****UPDATE******

New Zimmerman cross drilled front discs fitted with spare set of pads.
Notorious engine oil pipework to cooler replaced. Bit of a tricky job this one to to without damaging the cooler, all sorted now though and cooler intact.

              And I've just bought a e39 525m sport !
But maybe this thread or even forum is not the best place to discuss it

              Love M5's though they rock
For what this cost me so far I could have bought an S2

E39's are certainly built to a higher standard than any other car i've owned, the fact that it weighs slightly more than the RS6 with it's quattro drive train and big fook off gearbox kind off speaks for itself.

Normally i will use one for 6 months then swap over to the other. I keep giving the misses a row for slamming the doors in the RS6 because she is so used to having to use a lot more effort to close the M5 ones. Even from the way the doors close you can tell they're built to last. Theres one guy on the M5Board forum who has just passed 300k miles with no major mechanical issues, just old school regular maintenance, frequent oil changes etc. At 140k mines just a baby he he

Bumpety bump guys, anyone looking for a new toy?

Done 3 x diff seals and 2 x pre cat O2's since last bump.

Not in use now so SORN'd off the road.

Will condsider p/x, another S2 (ABY) as have already got 3B, diesel car, motorbike, transit van. Open to suggestions really.
                  Cheers

Im liking the look of the m5. Have u still got it? Only problem is that u r 730 miles from me which is a 1500 mile round trip!!

Would have to be a very tempting price to get me to travel that distance! So are u open to offers?

I do have a 56 plate 320d touring but not sure I want to get rid

                    regards

Hi there, thanks for the offer of the BMW but they're just a wee bit too small for our expanding family, i struggle with cars anyway due to being so tall, 6ft 6". I do still have the M5 though and appreciate your a fair distance away so willing to help with travel costs etc to the mainland.

                      Certainly open to offers.

                      Thanks and Regards

If you were 100% wanting the car i could take it to either of the two mainland ferry ports. Ullapool or Uig (Isle of Skye). Ullapool is the quickest route, however going the Uig direction is simply stunning but takes a fair bit longer.

I'm flexible so could take the car to either but would require a deposit to ensure i'm not out of pocket as i've been messed around in the past.

                              Hope you understand.
