  • URS4 Project

Started working on the URS4 yesterday by removing the small KKK24 and manifold.
It make way for my GT3071R and Tubular Manifold.

A few modifications needed oil feed/return pipe, water pipes and Exhaust.

I find that the turbo and downpipe are very close to the Fuel filter so a shield of some type will need fabricated.

Will you be bracing the manifold ?

yes will do as there is a fair bit of weight in the turbo and manifold.

Good job looks like a similar manifold to the one i have, i had all the collector re-welded to strengthen it up and braced it from below and above, didnt have any trouble with it good to see another forum member using one.

Not too sure whether the issue with stalling has been sorted with using the gt3071r on motronic, i heard swaping the MAF over to the pressure side of the turbo seemed to solve it,

What hp and torque figures are you hoping for ?

nice work what make of manifold is that? i'm thinking along the lines of a GT3071R and tubular manifold for my S2 during its winter rebuild.

Not wanting to rain on your intercooler parade BUT...

I think there are better intercoolers out there to use than the EVO 8 you have chosen. The inlet and outet tubes on the end tanks are pointed in very non-optimal directions, requiring those 90 degree bends that you had to install in order to make the intercooler work. Those sharp bends will result in an unnecessary pressure loss.

In my opinion, you would be way better off flow-wise with an Apikol intercooler or even something cobbled together from Taiwanese intercooler cores than that EVO 8 intercooler.

              Have a look at this:

              https://www.apikol.com/index.php#products,Kool

And that doesn't even start on the issue of what you had to do to the bumper to install the EVO intercooler. I am sure your insurance agent would (will) have a comment about it, especially if you are ever in an accident.

              But that's just my opinion.

                      "$1348: Try this"

I followed that link. It is very close to what I was talking about. I have installed two FMICs (one at a time, not together) on my 93 S4. The first was based on a Taiwanese eBay core very similar to the one in the link and was, for a time, sold by 034 as a complete kit. The difference is probably I was able to use a 3" core (because I have NAmerican bumpers that sit further out from the body than the Euro bumpers). The one in the photo looks like it is a 2.5" core. The bracket is very much like the first 034 kit bracket but is almost a no-brainer when you realize that you can drop the bracket from the A/C condenser mount and the IC core has mounting bosses (nuts welded to the core). The remaining tricks are related to getting the pipes and hoses to run smoothly from the turbo to the FMIC and then to the throttle body.

The second one I installed was an Apikol. Much nicer core, beautiful cast end tanks, simpler to mount, sits lower down in the bumper (gets more air flow). Pipes were similar but different. AFAIK, this is now the FMIC kit that 034 sells (they dropped the Taiwanese core-based kit). However, I am not sure how much a Euro bumper would have to be trimmed (on the back) to mount an Apikol FMIC since the Apikol core thickness was selected based on NAmerican bumpers.

Evo 8 intercooler - it was free so i modded the front end to take it. But the pipe work and bumper are just on to see are on for a road test with the KKK24.

The car will not be on the road much as its my toy. So not to worried about insurance.

                        Quick update.

Head has now had the exhaust studs that sheared removed and a good clean. Also the 7a Exhaust cam has been stripped from the other head and is ready to get fitted.

Waiting on the RS2 Rod bearings and then booking the car into garage to get use of a 2 poster to get the Scat rods in there. (Anyone know the torque settings for the ARP rod bolts)

                        Other parts i have ready

                        034 lower compression head gasket
New gasket set (just need inlet manifold and water manifold gasket)
                        034 Adjustable Fuel pressure regulator
                        Apexi AVCR
                        GT3071R
                        Tubular manifold
                        034 55lb injectors

                        Still to get

                        VEMS ECU
New 3" downpipe with screamer pipe.
                        Black samco hoses for intercooler.
Brakes (sorted now with some Porsche 6 pot cayenne calipers)

So next week i should be busy if all goes to plan.

                            Not yet!!!!

I have one big red caliper just need to find another or a pair on ebay. I bought a pair of front big reds and the guy sent rears(He thought they were the same) so sent back. So still on the look out............

Not sure to change the front struts as i have URS6 struts which i have been told are better for brake mounting. As i have the UFO struts on my car....... (brake fade after 2corners usually )

Just hope the weather is ok for the rebuild as i am doing it in the driveway......
