  • Catch tank - how does it work?

Not sure if this is the right place for this one, so Mods please move as appropriate.

Next off, this thread is really for the 'mechanically/technically challenged', like me...

I gather from the thread on the Mocal catch tank, that it :-

eradicates the crappy standard breather system; and

is for catching oil vapour instead of using the PCV hose.

    So,

what does the PCV hose do?

    what is it connected to?

where does the oil vapour come from?

how is the catcher connected up in place of the PCV hose?

what are the advantages of the catch tank vs the PCV hose?

Any diagrams or pics would help I'm sure.

    Thanks in advance

There are quite a few threads on this if you have the time to search, including 2 I did in the last couple of months.

Basically the only issue is the carbon canister plumbing as everything else gets replaced. The fix is to re-route the fuel tank breather in the boot.

Overall it was all in all very easy to sort.

There are three main benefits with a good catch/cyclone tank -

              1. Reduced air temp with all that hot oil vapour removed => less chance of knock for same operating condish

              2. Cleaner air without all that oily crap => better burn => more performance

              3. No oily gunge building up in the intercooler and intake plumbing

                Thanks Paul

Sounds like a very beneficial mod for the cost involved.

Do we have a definitive 'how to'?

Adding a catch tank is straight forward, and very beneficial. I used a beer tin on my old Mk II Golf GTis. I will do something more elaborate with my S2 when I start on the engine mods.
