s2 knowledge...
hi all, have seen a few s2 for sale and most seem to have over 140k,whats the going price for a refresh i.e new bearings and rings, and maybe a head overhaul if needed???
also as the s2 has the wastegate on it,could i make it external wastegate, without any ecu issues?also would like to fit a custom single box exhaust 3" pipework, air filter and a home fries ecu or similar, would the standard engine be relaible like this???also are 3b as good as aby for uning apart from the g/boxes...thanks in advance... ![]() |

200k is not a problem as long as it's been serviced. Mine's at 165k and has been used properly
![]() New head gasket, water pump, belts and a few bits and bobs will be £500-£1000, complete engine rebuild £2k with the head rebuilt, £3-4k for a tuned up engine and new clutch etc. Wastegate is already external, do you mean the diverter valve? Not worth going for an atmospheric on but you can get hybrids that allow you to vary the amount of air between recirculated and atmosphere. Mine is running 3" with homefries, RS2 IC, Samcos and a modified airbox. Don't bother with a cone, waste of money. Mine is reliable, a lot faster than stock and sounds great. Gearboxes are fine, it's 1st that's the problem. 3B box has nice ratios IMO. ABY and RS2 boxes can take a lot of abuse as long as they are fwed with good oil and don't whine to begin with. Good luck finding a car. HTH.

These cars aren't like ricers, they are build properly as a turbo'd car, not as an afterthough done on the cheap - they are just about run in at 100k not falling to bits, so no need for a rebuild just because its done that kind of mileage.. there are plenty of folk on here with 200k or more miles on the original engine and still going strong.
Parts for rebuilds general start at around £1500 upwards depending on the parts you spec - stock internals are good for upper 300s, rods being the weak points. Pistons are forged as standard, crank is bullet proof. The WG is already a proper external set-up so you won't need to change anything there until you are running big power. Budget £1k for a decent 3" turbo back system, and yes the stock engine would be absolutely fine on a homefries - most poeple on the stock engine run with it - excellent upgrade by all accounts. HTH EDIT: Beaten ![]()

plenty of 100k+ mile engines have been cracked open to find the wear has been so little that the honing of the bores is still visible. These engines are majorly under-stressed at stock settings so absolute mileage should be of little worry.
A good 3b box should be fine for decent power, though multiple hard launches or really aggressive boost delivery on a remap might kill it early for sure. You also get a single-mass flywheel on the 3b but lose out elsewhere with distributor based ignition versus coilpacks on the ABY etc. Had mine 9 years this July, exhaust, homefry, ABY airbox, 18's, bilsteins and H&R's and overall its been pretty reliable other than usual fluid leaks, sensors and suspension related items that wear thats been about it in 110k miles of ownership. Never lifted the head and its past 185K miles in total. |

thanks for the advice...i would be fabricating my own exhaust,as 1k is a lot of money, and have done many before on skylines i have owned...the reason for asking abouth the wastegate was my previous skyline ran t51r and was obviously external wastegated/screamer pipe...so was wondering if i changed the actual wastegate and re welded the exhaust where it was siamesed in to the down pipe...would it bring any faults up on the ecu...as the noise of the 5 pot and screamer pipe would be amazing...dont all burn me down at once...

Standard waste gate is good for 500hp easy, You will strugle to cut and reweld a flange to one of the OEM cast manifolds.
Yes 1K is alot building your own is pretty straight forward, Welcome to the madness it all goes down hill from the day you by one and start tunning it ![]()

Downpipe is a bit of a job because of the lack of space.
Best bet is to get it to max on a stock turbo, should be entertaining for a bit. Then save for RS2 setup.

the gearbox can handle multiple hard launches, its the clutch that will eventually give up btdt only time the gearbox will give major problems is 500+bhp and serious abuse.

I've got a 3B clutch, launched my heavy ABY 5 times in a row (<5.5s 0-60) and it was fine. Will be swapping it for the next level tho.
