  • MPG Figures

Was having the usual car talk banter with a colleague today and he ended up betting me a months wages that a standard S2 would never break 25mpg and i reckon it would break 30. Do i win or pay up?

I reckon any car is capable of 25 mpg, if the conditions are right.

Well, ok, maybe not any, put certainly most bar and F1 or super car!

Certainly to my knowledge, a standard S2 shouldnt have to much problem with achieving that on a motorway run?

yer, keep it off boost below 3k - you should be able to manage that for a mile or so no worries

I'd already be planning spending my winnings

Easy! On a motorway run at 70 - 80mph you should be seeing 28+mpg.. I do anyway
I hope the conditions were not set on track use though..

          Agreed.
I regularly got 28+ in mine, with the best ever at 33.1.

Best: 32.something on a motorway run, resetting the computer when already up to speed.

Typical: it's saying 24.something at the moment which is a standard mix of motorways, town driving and back roads. (Ok, perhaps there's a little more backroads than normal... )

Worst (over some distance - it's easy to get 5.0 mpg up momentarily in stop start traffic): see here

              Ck.
Shocked, exhausted, hosed, bushed, dumped, chipped, mounted, filtered, gauged, packed, intermittantly wiped and braked. I mean broken. Now, about the car...

Supose nows a bad time to say that my average in the focus 1.8 over 2300 miles is 26 then?

over 85% of that is short distance driveing though, to be fair, and i do tend to cruise at high altitudes when sat on the motorway

My wager is based on the figures quoted on s2central.net. The discussion was based on whether or not an S2 Avant would make a sensible daily driver for someone that just can't stomach diesels anymore but does around 80 - 90 motorway miles a day. Does anyone have any real time figures that they have compiled?

I always calculate mine per tank of furl, and don't trust the trip computer to be accurate.
I never had a tank that did less than 20 MPG.
                      27-30 was the norm.

I quite often do a 450 mile weekend dash up to Newcastle and back.
Used to get 23.5mpg as an average - but since cleaning my maf, it went straight up to 25!

...and the other end of the economy scale?
I always work the rally car out at 5mpg on stage and 20mpg on the linked road sections. Makes all calculations easy except the jerry cans are 20 litre cans! DOH!!
