Yes 9k rpm would be very nice!! Mountune do the Jag V6 to that kind of spec without turbo's for somewhere north of £10k.

The car will mainly be for road use, but maybe with the odd sprint type session. I hear what you're saying regarding ratios & power/weight etc. That certainly makes sense going from my experience with Yb Cosworth powered cars.

That's reason I planned on using baby quick spooling turbo's, so that it isn't too far removed from a N/A engine in it's characteristics, and make some use if the V6's natural grunt.

I guess the thing with these Audi boxes is, they're cheap & plentiful, so swapping them & playing with ratios isn't too much of a hassle. And I can have lots of fun trying to break them too

Yes I know Brian & the 4 wheeled shenanigans that he gets up to!

If it's a 6R4 forget the turbos and go for 9k rpm!
Will you be racing the car or just road use? I think you'll want longish ratios from a TDI box or you'll struggle for traction with 400lbft and RWD in a car that weighs so little

BTW not sure if you know already, Tonks4x4 on the forum is doing an Audi powered 6r4, he is out your way in Notts

I've been juggling 4WD ideas for a couple of years, in order to make it a little more authentic, with the correct rear facing engine. It could be done, but would be quite complex. So I've settled for a stress free life & RWD. It will be fine on tarmac.
I measured an A4 box this afternoon, but thanks for the offer anyway

Only doing RWD? Iv been thinking of doing a similar project, one idea was cossy running gear with lengthened front prop to front wheels.

I have an 80 coupe box sitting for similar plans if you need measurements.

Sounds like a 6r4 replica brewing to me

There was certainly food for thought in your suggestion & I appreciate where you are coming from.

I still need suggestions for a gearbox though!! That said, I may opt for the 1.8T box and carry a few spare ones in case of failure..

Fair enough, if its in keeping with the car. Otherwise it seems like an expensive and long way round to do it properly, dropping compression, forged pistons, custom manifolds etc when OEMs like Audi and Nissan have already done the hard work for you. Sounds like a cool project - do you have a thread running?

It's partly for aesthetics & partly because I know Fords like the back of my hand. I've turbocharged N/A engines in the past.

I am building a replica of something & the Jag / Ford V6 kind of in keeping with the original, partly due to the fact that these engines actually get fitted to the original vehicles to replace the fragile & expensive motor.

Noble turbocharge the Ford / Jag engine to great effect with their sports cars

I can't get my head around why you would go to the trouble of fitting an NA V6 and then turbo charging it, given there are purpose built FI engines all over the place that would be far cheaper and easier to fit
plus helpful people here who know them

Mondeo x type jag or Mazda turbo?
Dave, the engine needs to be mounted longitudinally, hence the need for a transaxle type transmission

ONLY the gear code will tell about this; then you need the org familiealbum, to decode this.... go to some of the yards, and have a close look...( some does have the VIN nr tag, so you may see thsi..( in the servicebook or in the car...)..the tranny may seen in diesel versons too...fx.. vw passat 2,5 v6, or bigger..or some of the bigger audis...after 95 the mostly are 6tr tranny
To be honest, up to now, I've only looked on eBay as they're all in one place. Would you know from this vin tag exactly which box is in this vehicle? (2001 Passat)

The 4:111 diff in the early box does appeal. However, the 3:875 of the Passat box is not too far away for what I need. Would this ratio be found inside the 1.8T box???
