Magnetic Reservoir Mod to Capture Un-filtered Steel Filings
Note that I've done this mod to both a B3, which has a Central Hydraulic System, and a B4 which does not.
Some of the ferrous debris you will find in your system is so small it gets through the filter, and gets re-circulated continuously. Even after one purges, flushes and replaces the fluid, you will not have removed all of the old fluid; or debris. This is a quick / simple / cheap way to add some service-life to your dear components for the Central Hydraulic System (or the Power Steering System on a B4, etc.). After power-purging my system and removing and carefully cleaning and drying my reservoir, I simply ringed the lower end of the four-sided reservoir's walls with pairs of super-magnets; and re-installed it. The magnets are thin and disc-shaped, large enough (approx. 1/2' OD) that they could neither enter, nor block the pump feed port if they did come loose (and a decade on, they haven't!). Each pair is separated by the thin wall of the reservoir. They are so powerful that shifting them, once 'paired' in position sandwiching the reservoir wall, is very difficult. The magnets are placed right above the reservoir floor only where the walls are flat, in total IIRC, I used seven pairs of magnets.

The Brake System Warning Light operation and the possible Hydraulic System's involvement...
Besides any non-Central Hydraulic System possible reasons for the subject light being lit, it (1st screen-shot below, or the illuminated word "BRAKE" (U.S. models only), ordinarily seen briefly during the engine start sequence), may (if flashing briefly during initial brake pedal application or is illuminated beyond during the start sequence) have one of several possible causes in the Hydraulic System (info in 2nd screen-shot from SJMAutoTechnik):

Below is a photo (thanks to Dave Kase) which will help you ID your bomb type, note sphere necks are either round or square, as per 20v.org description above.

Your quite welcome sir, thanks for fixing my hasty spelling mistake. If you haven't already guessed, by 'How I learned to love the bomb!', I meant that I quite like the response I get from this system (vs the vacuum system on my B4) and don't want to replace it with something else. So, here are some ideas on how I aim to keep it healthy.

A Central Hydraulic System Primer & Resources...
...or How I learned to love the bomb! (Hello Admin folks, please fix 'Hydraulic" spelling in thread title, thanks)
Similar to 'A 12v Primer and Resources', this aims to serve as an aide-memoire for me personally, and perhaps others may find this useful.
Because this topic may not become worthy of its' own forum section, perhaps the following approach may be of help. This is meant as a single place to simply list links to tech articles which may be of specific interest to folks, who like me will likely never give up on the original dual-purpose central hydraulic system. To keep it from becoming too lengthy, perhaps we can proceed as follows.
a) Rather than a place where entire lengthy posts and discussion resides, it may work best if just a series of short descriptive titles, perhaps include the reason it is useful if not obvious, accompanied by links to content;
b) Below I will eventually post some suggestions, links to some obvious sites (sadly, some perhaps now best just for data mining), and of specific articles on this forum and others. Questions, comment, discussions and your foot-noted grand opus on the necessity of Goo 2000 can perhaps best continue to be posted elsewhere. So to repeat, don't post your questions here, do browse through the screen-shots / photos / articles though, and comb the forum archives using the search and and advanced search functions first, then if you still have a question, post it at 'Today's Posts'; and
c) Despite that the "Central Hydraulics" links the braking and steering systems together, this location aims to address strictly hydraulic topics, making searching for same less tedious, the intent here is this will help to more easily link back into the hydraulic specific info more quickly. Certainly, as we all tend to stick to our own silos, it may also be helpful to list articles from elsewhere. Please add your suggestions as to what you found of utility, or that you think others may find informative.
These 1st eight pages below are from Audi's own (early?) 20V Coupe Service Training Manual, , the 9th is SJM Autotechnik's brilliant and simple system schematic, the last one is a group shot of most of the subject components save for the servo.
