So, I took the opportunity to clean and paint the lifting eye and bolts while they were off. All back together now and I'm pleased to report the coolant gauge works.

The set I have are for water temp, oil pressure and volts. The later S2 gauges are as you say, oil temp, oil pressure and volts. I think they came off a B2 Audi but could have been a Mk1 golf. They have vag part numbers and are vdo. Lucky find anyway and I'm well chuffed with them. Its really the water temp bit i wanted as i don't have that in my cluster.

Well done for persuading that out and great that the sensor happens to be the correct one!
That gauge would normally be for oil temp. Would it still work for water?
Having looked again at the gauge it doesn't actually say water so maybe you are correct. Anyway, its working but I'm yet to test accuracy. Gone wet here again so it will have to wait.

Looks way way better.
Took her for a spin.
Discovered that my oil temp gauge is way out of calibration on the coolant sensor.
So I will probably fit a spare oil temp sender I have and use it as it was meant to be used.
Re the 8j wheels. No rubbing at all during quite a good blat. But I did notice the car tracks a bit more. Nothing to worry about but noticeable.

I've been busy doing other things around the smallholding and the weather hasn't been great so not much has happened with the Ur.
I did sort of finish the radio install. Not really 100% happy as I found it difficult to mount in the glovebox as the control for the heater cable is in the way. At the moment it's sitting on some sound deadening foam.
I bought a mount box and cut a sheet of aluminium to top it off.
It works.
Still got to remake the gauge panel as the gaps are now bugging me.

I have a few other little jobs to do while the weather is grotty.
The temp sender at the bottom of the rad has been weeping for a while. I tried nipping it up which made things worse.
Unfortunately I had to drain the coolant to deal with the leak.
I have a new sensor but the old original one is working fine and the leak has been coming from the washer area.
So I used the washer from the new sensor and cleaned up everything before re fitting with a smear of high temp gasket maker.
You can see where someone has used a sealant previously. Hopefully should be good now.
Onto the exhaust. It's been touching the body and efforts to adjust the way it sits have not been successful.
I have concluded that the rear silencer is sitting about 5mm to far to the right. This means that the template supplied by Milltek to drill the holes was not good. These two mounts need to move to the left by 5mm.
However, before I do that I'm going to get some rubber mount material and see if I can make some new inserts and off set the hole by 5mm. Not really keen on drilling another 4 holes in my pristine boot!
