Before and after for the two engine mounts and rear crank seal housing. Gawd that box is proper minging when full of chemicals and glar. An hour or so of filth management soon had them all shiny again.

The engine mounts have been exposed to environment for many years so probably need a paint to bring them up tip-top.

Bought some more elcheapo storage boxes to give me room to keep any nicely cleaned / painted parts out of harms way during the work... Its impossible to stop flicking that degreaser all over the place - including my left eye - that wasn't pleasant, but my own stupid fault.

My word, those cam covers are stinking. Leave them submerged in Derv for week, agitated them every day and they should be recoverable without employing the high risk dish washer option. Will mean a but more elbow grease mind you. Looks like that motor went for a long time without an oil change at some point. Like the term Glar, describes that stuff well.

I've had to upgrade my chemical weapons

The nice motor factor man recommended something from Comma called 'Hyper Clean' - comes in various guises but I bought the gallon tin... This stuff is pretty potent and is at least making a start on loosening the shyte in the cam covers. A friend offered to clean them in an industrial steam / chemical machine so I'll take that offer on.

Some more pics of engine internals... previously filthy, now nice and shiny...

139 - main bearings being soaked
140 - main bearings after - and thrust washers labelled for orientation
142 - various mounts, sump parts and such ready for next stage

          You know the drill...

          143 - various filthy brackets
145 - same items after about 20-30 mins effort

The snub mount, like the other mounts hasn't come up beautiful so I might just apply some suitable paint onto these to refresh them and protect them further from the elements.

4 - chilli and rice for dinner
5 - crumble and custard for pud

Final pics from last nights toil...

144 - crank being deloused and you can see improvement in cam covers
146 - crank cleaned sufficiently well to go in a clean box with bearings now
148 - assorted bracketry ready for assembly - have to paint the mounts 1st though

Next job is to check over the oil pump and degunk that as well. Guess I better start sending some very long parts lists to Ben now - oh and another virtual shopping trip to FROSTs for paint and such.

PS - While I remember... whilst this 'Hyper Clean' product is superior to 'Envirosol' it has the disadvantage of dissolving latex gloves so you either have to enjoy black finger nails for a while or upgrade zee gloves.

Nice. You could fill each bore with a different curry and then turn it over on the starter motor to get your dinner. Yummers

Yes i have the paper ones. You can borrow them if you wand. The only thing is that the are in dutch I olso have the Audi 80 Quattro manual / Electrical system end the MPI/ignition V6 system.

Sadly the dutch is no good for me... I can live with 'Elsie' for now - might get more docs from Erwin on paper if I can remember.

Paul have you tried POR15 Marine Clean? Its the best degreaser I have used by far - mix it 4:1 with boiling water and it shifts anything in minutes - highly recommended for "Glar" deposits in sumps etc, amazing stuff. You can also leave stuff that is really stubborn in a bucket of it with a fish tank heater in there over night - works a treat!

I really didn't like the Frsots Ali-Clean stuff, I found it left a dusty kind of etched surface on the parts i tried it on, although your parts look ok?

I have just lit up an order at FROSTS for £200 quid of paints, tools and such but I didn't opt for marine clean... though I have wanted to try it - never heard anyone rave about it before - though I should have figured its good stuff based on the POR15 paint.

I noticed with Aliclean that you cannot leave it on neat for too long as the colour changes a little but other than that I was happy with it as it works quickly and seems to go a long way.
