I had something similar a few months ago ... a scraping noise that would appear then go away after a few miles up the road.

Turned out to be one of the rear exhaust rubbers had failed and so the sagging rear exhaust pipe that curls over the top of the rear offside prop was fouling and making the horrible noise

New rubber fitted and the noise went away

Believe it or not but we can actually get into second gear in some places.

    Scraping from rear wheel

Brian, many thanks for your reply. It does sound like a dust shield. I did have a quick look during one of my previous investigations and it seemed okay although maybe I need to have a harder look. On the plus side the handbrake is now much better than it's ever been, having had to fix the caliper, replace the disk and readjust the cables which were far too tight.

PS Didn't know you could go that fast on Yell.

    Thanks

    Donald

Perhaps the dust shield is touching the disk.

I have a mysterious scraping sound from the passenger side rear of a 1994 S2 Avant, that's driving me to distraction. It's most noticeable, actually it's pretty loud, at low speed, say 30mph to 40mph when decelerating but it's also there under acceleration. It goes away for about 100 miles if I jack it up take the wheel off and put it back on again! It doesn't go away if I just tighten up the wheel bolts, the wheel has to come off.
I've done this 6 times so far but I'm beginning to wonder if it's something sinister like a diff or a prop shaft.

To date I have renewed the disk, the wheel and the wheel bolts, and freed off the caliper, although I haven't replaced the pads. None of which has made any improvement.
I would be really grateful for any ideas.

    No.

Unless the crap that was on the pad is still there....

Why oh why did you take it to a "FastF*CK" place? Bybrake upgrade I assume you mean Porsche mono's? budget around £5-600 for the parts.

Pads and Discs after Kwik-Fit visit

    Hey Folks.

I was in Kwik-fit a couple of months back because I had a scraping sound whilst under braking.
They found a defect piece of metal on my brake pad, which they subsequently took off.

They told me that I would experience a scraping sound for a while because there would still be a groove in the disc. Is this correct?

There was a little scraping, but it went away.
The scraping has returned, but intermittently...
Kwik-fit didn't tell me that any pads were nearly worn out... should I get things checked out?

How much would a brake upgrade cost me?

    Thanks,

    JohnB
