  • Yet another brake option

Hi everyone, 1st post, but long time lurker on the various S2 forums.

My 91 3B S2 Coupe had already got aftermarket brakes when I purchased it earlier this year. They're made by an American company Wilwood www.wilwood.com

I worked out myself that they must be from their 'Superlite' range (4-pots). The part No's of the discs are 160-5845 and 160-5846 (I have an invoice from Rally Design Ltd for new ones). The disc sizes are 310x32mm.

As far as I can tell they work pretty well. I haven't driven an S2 with standard brakes to compare it with, but I did upgrade from a 90 20v quattro (same brakes?) to the S2

Don't know the price new (the new discs were £58.85+vat each in Nov '02), or the p/n for the top-hats. But it may well be worth looking into.

As far as I can tell there are no shims or spacers used. And they do fit inside 16" 5 spoke wheels!

I looked into these before I bought my hispec brakes.

Wilwood have been popular for years with rally car owners as an upgrade. Lots of places sell them just do a search on the net.

      See

      or

for lots of info on the calipers. No idea about caliper mounts for the S2 though

Peter, good to see another Sheffield S2 owner on the forum!

I could always take them off and have a measure! Of the brackets, that is

          Top info!!!!

Finally a kit that sits behind a 5 spoke wheel! Hmm, if you could take those measurements or see if the caliper carrier has a part number on it that would be great....

          Cheers,

            Brackets

If it stops raining this weekend I'll be doing some work on the car. So hopefully I'll have a look. Can't make any promises as I've got a shed load of stuff to do that I've been putting off. Trouble is all of it involves working outside!

              This sounds very interesting!!

Is this option likely to be cheaper than the others suggested before? As much as i'd like to upgrade my brakes, i simply can not afford £1500 for the kits suggested before

Wilwood are a highly regarded US brake manufacturer specialising in race calipers but unfortunately they don't do any fully sealed calipers.

Having said that, my 'unsealed' calipers are now 3 years old with no maintenance or re-sealing!

Oh and Rally Design (wilwood importers) are at www.raldes.co.uk for prices...

Pics would be greatly appreciated Peter!

Hi-spec did me a very good deal. i have paid £657, not inc. pads i bought them at trade price (£30)

Wont fit behind my 5 spoked wheels. I have got some 5 mm spacers to try, should be with me on tuesday. Will post pics etc as soon as i have the new brakes in my hands.

                    Pictures

Took the wheel off today to get some pictures. Sorry I couldn't dismantle further, I was over at my mates house and didn't have the tools or loctite. The carriers look simple affairs. If anyone is interested I will endevour to remove one and make a pattern. There is a number on the tophat (UNI 25), can't see anything on the carrier.

Can't work out how to post multiple pics so have zipped some.
