these interfaces overwrite the need to register the software then? I have some cables already which seem to work ok apart from not being able to view group 0 for the 3b

You'd be better off buying a vagcom cable from www.ecutool.com

Update to this thread from s2central

"Whilst a good deal of VAG-COM functionality can be tested for "free", to verify it works on your particular combination of PC and car, it's worth knowing that Group 000 cannot be accessed on any controller in the car until the software package is fully activated i.e Paid for and registered !

This means you won't be able to read measurement blocks from the ABS controller, Airbag controller or 3B engine with the freeware VAG-COM download. However, you will be able to read fault codes and read data from controllers which use Groups 001-255. Check with the latest information at VAG-COM's home ."

So for us poor relations "3b owners" you need to get the all singing all dancing paid for version.....Who has a code they want to give me then to activate my software, or is it not that simple?!

    IIRC the answer is no.

Ok ive started to have a look at that pdf, problem is im using a mac as my normal computer and the laptop for vagcom isnt connected to the net yet, started to download that driver file but it just brought up a page of computer jargon, i will try and use a windows pc to download the driver tomorrow but im not sure if that link is broken or not, maybe you could check it for me if you have time?!

Im sure this is just a driver problem, the light on the interface lead comes on when its connected to the car, and i have version 409.1 of vagcom.

    Thanks for the help!

i have borrowed this lead from a mate, and yes i think he got it from ebay.

The genuine ross tech ones are too expensive, surely the copies being sold on ebay do work!?

i have looked in device manager with the usb lead connected and it comes up as usb com port 6. As you say there are 4 com ports and 1 usb port to choose from on the software. I tried usb which didnt work and all of the other 4 com ports which also didnt work!?
