intermittant smoking on 2.8v6

1997 2.8 30v A4 quattro 170k

uses a bit of oil,

smokes on overrun sometimes, or sometimes under load but always clears after a couple of seconds,

but not constantly

does this def sound like stem seals? if it were would this not be constant on over run?
