These output test instructions courtesy of SJM Autotechnik worked for me despite it being for a 1992-96 S4/S6 AAN. The output test is activated from the terminals that you plug in VAG COM in the fuse box.

There is an "output test" mode that will cycle the engine electrical solenoids on and off to verify they are working correctly. You are able to test the 5 Fuel Injectors Idle Stabilizer Valve (ISV) Carbon Canister Solenoid Valve Waste Gate Solenoid (waste gate frequency valve)

To activate the Output Tests, you must first connect the Jumper Wire across the Fault Code Connectors as shown in the diagram and THEN turn on the ignition to initiate the output tests. (DON'T START THE ENGINE) After the ignition is turned on, remove the jumper wire after at least 4 seconds.

FUEL INJECTOR TESTS: After you have removed the jumper wire, you can place your fingers down on fuel injector #1 and then open and close the throttle with your other hand. You should hear and feel #1 Injector click 5 times and then be quiet, place your fingers on Injector #2 and again open and close the throttle, Injector #2 should click 5 times, place your fingers on Injector #4 and open and close the throttle, Injector #4 should click 5 times, repeat for Injectors #5, then Injector #3

After doing the last injector test on #3 the Output test will switch to testing the IDLE STABILIZER VALVE (ISV). You should hear this Idle Stabilizer Valve clunk open and closed..

Connect the jumper wire again for 4 seconds to go to the next output test:
The blue Carbon Canister valve behind the idle stabilizer valve (behind throttle area) will be cycled on and off. You may want to place your hand around the carbon canister valve to feel it operate.

Connect the jumper wire again for 4 seconds
The Waste Gate Solenoid on the intake boot near the turbo inlet will be cycled on and off. This valve operation is pretty loud, so you should be able to hear it operate.

Connect the jumper wire again for 4 seconds.
;End of Output Test Procedure, fault code memory has been cleared.

NOTE: To repeat the Output tests, the ignition should be turned off for at least 20 seconds. If Output tests are repeated, the INJECTORS will NOT be cycled again, unless the engine is started and run briefly.

@ Jas, hmm i dont know i know my mates Snap-On diagnostics can do output test though as i did that on the Coupe , cheers for the advice [/QUOTE]

On the cq20v you can do the output tests with a paper clip, S2 is probably the same procedure. I'd need to dig out my bentley manual for the instructions, something like bridging the connections before you turn the ignition on, then each time you short the link it skips to the next output test. Used it before to find a dodgy fuel injector. Or find a mate with vagcom

    Mark.

Yeah we did that clear the codes twice and the above two came back everytimes

Pin 4 and 5 on the ECU ?

Check they're not joined together or touching a ground.

Oh, ISV comes under output tests too, that should be heard to be operating the stepper motor inside if it's working correctly.

Seems to me the carbon canister valve ain't working (I know I'm stating the obvious). Can this £6k bosch diagnostic run output tests? if so do it, as the carbon canister valve comes under the output tests. You should be able to hear it clicking as the test is run.
(My local specialists have that Bosch gear but prefer vag-com though, as it does more )
Just noticed your post on aircon stuff, the carbon canister is down in the wheelarch area-ish on an ABY, prime time to have a look whilst you are in there for the aircon fault.

Well lets just say i borrowed it for a short while :mischeif:

GSF stock the Bosch diagnostic system which has the exact same functionaliy as VAG com.

Pretty trick computer shame it costs 6k to buy and 1k a year to keep uptodate!!!

Do GSF charge for pulling codes? What do they use?

Avant Diagnostic Carbon canister and ISV

    Hello!

Need some help folks translating this into english for me!

The Avant has been high idling when warm so i took it up to GSF to pull some fault codes and this is what came back.

    01257 4431 Idle Stabiliser Valve, N71
    - Signal to ground
    - Signal to B+
Short to B+ in N71 or between N71 and pin 4 of J220
Short to ground in N71 or between N71 and J220
    Fuse blown
Open circuit or faulty connector at N71
Engine speed out of range (warm idle)
Poor throttle response in part load range
    Erratic idle
    Check N71 and associated wiring
    Check fuse

    01247 4343 Carbon canister frequency valve, N80
    - Signal to B+
    - Signal to ground
Short to B+ in N80 or between N80 and pin 5 on J220
Short to ground in N80 or between N80 and pin 5 on J220
    Fuse blown
    Open circuit
Poor response in portion of load range
    Possible fuel odour
    Check N80 and associated wiring
    Check fuse

What does the 2nd one mean?
