Are these readers any use on a 3B engine?

I am aware of VAG-COM but want a cheaper solution (free version wont read 3B) especially since the 3B ECU doesnt give out a lot of info.

Just spied this on Euro Car Parts, says 1996 onward but assume that is purely for the connector as long as it will read the 3B ECU codes?

I bought one like in your first post and it's useless.
I then bought the vagcom cable and two plug adapter and downloaded vagcom lite. It works ok for basic fault reading on my ABY.
My friend has full vagcom and a proper rosstech cable and it's awesome.

Remember I have a 3B so vagcom lite doesnt work, I'd have to spend the $150 (£120) for the registered version plus the Ross-Tech lead

I haven't seen the 3b connector but isn't it the same two single plugs, one black and one white, as on the aby?

This works with my 7A, so assume it would work with a 3B, as long as you have the two plugs to one plug adapter.

A lot cheaper than vagcom, and can read realtime values.

Yes same plugs (although mine are missing so would have to rewire them) but 3B only uses the 000 10 channel where the newer ECU's use the 001-255 4 channels

I have recently got the obdeleven for my 3B but have not got it to work yet. Be aware that you need to be connected to the Internet for it to work, something I didn't realise at the time.

I'm sure there is a fuse in fuse box that can blow so you think it is not reading. I have fuse 15 in my head but I could be wrong. Someone else maybe able to confirm this. Not much help sorry...

You can install the Malfunction Indicator Lamp, I installed it in my old 3b, worked a treat or you can use the blink codes with a 12v LED and a piece of wire.
Cant seem to post the direct link but go to S2 central and then to technical data, electrical system, instrument cluster, MIL circuit have a read.
Helped me a long time ago to find faults with WGFV and ISV

Ah see you have a B2 but you can still use blink codes

Yeah I was looking at the blink code lamp last night, I think this is the route I'm probably going to go down
