ps ive dug out another 7a bottom end that i want rid of,sooner the better or it will get binned.Free to collector.
If they are crossdrilled through the 'loab's' of the crank this may just be a method of balancing. It's something I've seen on large marine and locomotive cranks.

@ Terrybullwon - Which cambelt/tensioner/water pump/oil pump setup are you thinking of running?

The 7A block is the same as a 3B apart from the bore as far as I could tell. Maybe I should dig the 7A, 3B and ABY blocks out of the garage and line them up to compare them.

    Doh - yeah - that'll be a thing - well spotted Stu

I don't really wish to know that a KV engine can be converted into S2/RS2 spec cos I sold one about 5yrs ago in a perfectly working Typ85 Coupe for very bad money simply cos I could no longer store the old girl. Thank lord it wasn't a quattro as I would have given away an 016 transmission as well. Boohoo - the things you do under pressure. Doh

I'm pretty sure the KV engine (10V 2226cc non turbo K-Jetronic circa 84-89) is the same basic block as 3B and beyond but it doesn't have the oil squirters and wouldn't have come with the higher spec bearings as the turbo engines, but it is the same crank. Dunno the small print though and I'm not up on the NF or NG engines.

Just a quick check on the old family album...

    KV is 10V 2226
NG is 10V 2309 so deffo different block to 3B/ABY etc

Same crank in KV, NG, 7A, 3B, ABY, ADU

Oil squirters appear to be fitted to all blocks except the early KV.

    2226 Base block part number is 034 103 101
    Suffix for KV is S
    Suffix for 3B is P
for ABY/ADU is N - same as AAN of course

That tells me that any change is minor but I dunno what it would be.

    No, 3B is 2.2 Litres as it's an 81mm bore the 7A is a 82.5mm IIRC

The rods and pistons are different in the NA than the turbo.
