IMO audi thermostats are crap, every audi and i have had, (and i have had a lot) have all had at least 1 thermostat and in one car 3 of them in a year!!!! I just think they are a weak point and rubbish quality. My bro in law has had the same problems too with newer audi's too.

This is probably a bit late (but I have posted this before):

As other's have said, its probably the thermostat. Replacement is probably a bit more challenging than for the AAN but here is my AAN thermostat replacement procedure:

    Hope this (still) helps.

I removed that weber carb before I sold that car - glad I did - only had a few thousand miles through it and these puppies can make decent money on eBay. Bonus - just gotta find it now

Yep - when water is cold, you get more fuel for enrichment and more advance.

Can't say I miss using a 'choke' right enough. Last time I had to do that was on the Astra 1.6SR of my student days - had a flaky GM Varajet carb with automatic choke that was temperamental so I put on a Weber 32/34 DMTL carb with a manual choke to solve that problem. Ahh the old days.

    Spot on.
When mine needed changing it was kicking my MPGs ****! Will be on "choke" for want of a better word.

You'd have thought so, and by rights yes, but I've noticed no difference between before and after in mpg figures. [shrug]

Defo the stat, mine did the same.

Not a big jub either, just a little fidly. Plus you get the satisfaction of not having to pay anybody.

Agreed this sounds like thermostat also. As Jas11n says - wrap it up with a few other tiresome jobs when you get that far in.
